    Defending from corner kicks

Posted by Luton thru and thru on 16/5/2025, 5:34:02

Watching the league one playoffs has highlighted to me the ridiculous situation we now have for corner kicks with nothing short of wrestling matches going on in the middle of the park. Defenders are blatantly holding attackers down and wrestling them to ground in full sight of the referee and not being punished for it. Why is this not a penalty kick?
I blame the referees who have allowed this crazy situation to get worse over time and it is ruining the game. In my opinion we need some sort of reset by the referees association - come out and say that this kind of behaviour will be punished with a penalty kick going forwards.

The law is there for a penalty to be given, always has been, providing the ball is in play.

Problem is the referees are reluctant to implement it, no idea why. Give a couple of penalties in the first half, even during the first two corners if need be along with yellow cards and the players would soon get the message, as would the managers.

Should of been sorted out years ago.
Pisses me off when you can get away with Judo holds in the penalty area but the slightest touch anywhere else on the pitch is a free kick.

What kind of fool would follow signs that were never there.

Even straight reds for minimal contact.

Correct SAHB. My feeling is that referees are worried that by giving penalties and yellow cards in such circumstances they would incur the wrath of the manager of the club penalised so they opt for the easy way out and ignore the situation.

Most officials are weak and trying to avoid controversy. The laws are so regularly ignored by the officials in favour of an easy life.

Throws in. The referee orders the player to take it from the right place. Player moves back to that place and then runs forward ten yards before releasing the ball. What action does the referee take ? Answer : none. It's farcical.

No, that's not how it works.

If referees are behaving consistently in a certain way it's because that's what the authorities are asking of them.
