    Players socks and shin pads

Posted by Godders on 12/3/2025, 19:31:10

Looking at recent pictures of players socks when did the trend become to completely cut off the foot part of the sock and just use them as like leg warmers?

And as for the pathetic excuse for tiny shin pads - what's that all about?

About 50 years ago when I played I had 2 pairs of thick socks from millets which I cut the foot part out and inserted a block pad in-between I was told about it by an ex pro at the time so the idea has been around a long time

my boy recently tried to convince me to buy a pair of nike football socks, when questioned, he revealed he was planning on cutting the feet off.......he got sondico ones and sucked it up!

I wrote a feature on the history of shinpads recently for When Saturday Comes. It’s strange how there are so many weirdly specific rules on some aspects of football, yet the Law on shinpads only states they have to offer “adequate protection.”
Tbf, loads of players like George Best didn’t wear them at all.

Chris Waddle never wore them and had the cool look of socks rolled down.

Dave Thomas is the player I associate with that look

Not sure how Aasgaard's qualify as adequate.

See also Jack Grealish, Tino Livramento, Dominic Calvert-Lewin etc etc. Strangely, there aren’t any high-profile cases of a leg injury being blamed on a tiny shinpad.
