Can we stop going on about McGuinness’ fee?

Posted by Earls on 9/3/2025, 15:43:35

Below is a list of every Championship club’s record signings. Only four clubs - Millwall, Plymouth, Preston and Oxford - have spent less on theirs than we did on Mark McGuinness. A special mention to Oxford for not even breaking Ł500,000 as yet.
We’ve obviously spent all season debating our recruitment policy. Yes, Mark McGuinness made a mistake for Burnley’s first goal yesterday. But he’s been one of our most reliable players this season. Crucially, in our defence, he’s also rarely injured.
We can’t criticise 2020 for doing things on the cheap, then whine that our relatively inexpensive record signing is a waste of money every time he messes up. It makes us look cheap too.
Fwiw, I don’t think we should be throwing Ł15m at players. But I’d have liked another three or so in the Ł6m bracket before the season started.

Blackburn - Jordan Rhodes, Andy Cole, Ł8m
Bristol City - Tomas Kalas, Ł7.8m
    Burnley - Zeki Amdouni, Ł16m
Cardiff - Emiliano Sala, Ł15m (or Gary Medel, Ł11m)
    Coventry - Haji Wright, Ł8m
    Derby - Krystian Bielik, Ł10m
    Hull - Ryan Mason, Ł13m
    Leeds - Georgino Rutter, Ł36m
    Luton - Mark McGuinness, Ł6m
    Middlesbrough - Britt Assambalonga, Ł16m
    Millwall - Camiel Neghli, Ł3m
    Norwich - Emiliano Buendia, Ł33m
    Oxford - Dean Windass, Ł470,000
    Plymouth - Michael Baidoo, Ł1.5m
    Portsmouth - Peter Crouch, Ł12m
    Preston - Milutin Osmajic, Ł2m
    QPR - Christopher Samba, Ł12.5m
Sheff Utd - Rhian Brewster, Ł23.5m
Sheff Wed - Jordan Rhodes, Ł8m
    Stoke - Gianelli Imbula, Ł18m
    Sunderland - Didier N’Dong, Ł13.8m
    Swansea - Andre Ayew, Ł18m
    Watfraud - Ismaila Sarr, Ł25m
    WBA - Salomon Rondon, Ł14.2m

WHY DON'T WE JUST BUY DEAN WINDASS?

I completely agree that he's not the main issue – far from it. However, I don’t really follow the idea that because a player was relatively inexpensive, we shouldn’t criticise their performances. He's not been great quite a few times this season.

        What do these figures mean?
How is 8 million on Andy Cole in 2001 relevant to 6 million for McGuinness in 2025?
A version of Andy Cole in 2025 would be upwards of 60 million.

His attitude is good. Never gives up but he's just not that great a player.
It's not his fault we paid Ł6m for him.
Hes just another shining example of just how shit our recruitment is. We're not hearing anything from the club as to what they're going to do to change that. I wouldnt trust the current lot to find players for my local boozers Sunday league team, let alone find what we need to successful in league 1 next season.

You must be watching a different McGuinness to me. He’s shit, ponderous with possession, turns like an oil tanker and for someone so slow his reading of the game is poor. He’ll be good in league one though, that’s his level. Not even close in comparison to Osho, Mengi or the lesser spotted Burke, even Christ has shown in 2 games he’s miles ahead of him. Even an old man like Naismith makes him look like a Sunday League player. 6milllion is a fucking joke. I bet Cardiff are still laughing

Yes, I am watching a different McGuinness to you, as all your points are baseless on the player I’ve been watching, and for who Ł6m is about right.

Onions and all that, but baseless??? I’ve watched 90% of our games In the flesh this year and he’s hopelessly out of his depth. If Burke , Mengi or Tom were fit he’d be nowhere near the first eleven. It shows how far we’ve fallen if you think he’s decent.

Burke is our best defender, but made of glass. McGuinness has been far better than Mengi was this season. (I appreciate it’s a separate argument on why Mengi’s form fell off a cliff from the player he was pre-injury last season.)
I’m not saying we’ve bought the new Sergio Ramos, more that Ł6m is now the going rate for a solid (imo) centre-half. I wish we’d bought more at McGuinness’ level than fart about with free transfers like Baptiste and Walsh.

I agree with you that McGuinness has been reasonable overall but I think you're being harsh on Mengi.

Mengi was poor before his op - understandable when he went public about playing through an injury.
But the circumstances of playing through the injury in the first place and going public with it were very rum, and reflected badly imo on both the club and player.

I do not understand the constant knocking if McGuiness. He is the least of our issues.

Agreed. To be fair he has made some big mistakes but we haven't had a settled defence all season and that is what any centre back needs.

He’s a solid league one defender so should be ok next year if he’s still with us.
Mengi will definitely be gone, not sure if anyone will take a punt on Burke.

Mengi was injured, not easy to be brilliant when not fit.
