    Clapping the players off

    Posted by LTFC39 on 9/3/2025, 14:03:48

After a 4-0 defeat. Really don't get this. Why?

I've booed this season but only on a handful occasions when it's deserved.

Clapping by definition is to applaud a good performance or something positive happening.

No one should boo their team off. Never have done it and never will.

        Booing is for poofs.

I find calling them 'useless cunts' does wonders for their self esteem

I clapped the players off yesterday, to my eyes they bust a gut and put the effort in the whole game. The fact some of them are over the hill, some are not good enough and they have a manager who appears to be out of his depth (though given his very slow starts in other managerial roles this may change) is not their fault

I know there are many who think our players are not trying but I don't see that myself.

Not one player gave up yesterday, I have seen games when players give up and I have seen games when the players have not been good enough as individuals or as a unit.

I think this season we have mostly been trying but just not where we should be.

To support a team is to recognise the moments they need the most support and give it, not just cheer when things are going well.

This is no season for loving
This is the season of pain

Those that have chosen to stay behind after games and applaud totally inept and unacceptable performances since February are part of the problem IMO. They've made it OK to get beaten. Players just have to turn up and they'll get praise.
Middlesbrough away this season for example. There were still a handful of supporters clapping at the end despite the players showing no desire whatsoever on the pitch. Unbelievable.

It was mostly just a couple of posts from me.

How he though he could criticise those who stayed behind for the team when he had buggered off early was just incredible.

Well deserved abuse. It's a fucking stupid point. You don't want people pointing the finger at negativity being part of the problem? Then don't do the same about positivity.

Not that you saw or heard it happening at West Ham, as you made a right song and dance on here about having walked out well before the end.

I did leave west ham well before the end. Had a very enjoyable beer by the canal instead.

I'm not precious, just right - again.

We rewarded some really shit performances last year with applause as it was the Prem and we were all happy to be there. We allowed the notion that losses would be accepted by fans to properly bed in.
The warning signs for this season were evident in pre season, but we carried on our seal impressions.

Having an opinion does no make you right, it is exactly that, an opinion.
In my opinion, your last paragraph is complete bollocks.

I suppose it depends what you think the "role" of a football supporter is. If you think it's just being a customer, like going to a play or an opera and waiting to be entertained, then if the performance is rubbish you'll show your negative verdict, boo hiss etc.

If you think being a supporter is being part of a "club" trying to influence results and create a successful atmosphere, then you'll try to keep it positive and encouraging.

Maybe all that "12th man" stuff is an unrealistic cliche but it's still the way I try to behave at games.

I can think of few reasons.

-Clapping shows loyalty, that they back the team regardless of the result.

              - Showing love for the club itself, rather than the specific performance on the day.

              - For encouragement. To lift the players spirits and push them to do better in the next match.

              - For some its simply tradition and they will do it in every match regardless of performance.

                  Spot on with first three.

I don't understand how anyone with a grain of sense would fail to grasp that! Whether they choose to do it or not is entirely their business but it's plainly obvious why some do.

I choose to clap, inside, I might be seething. Anyway, sorry to have missed you at HT. Did see a motley crew of old un's amassed outside at full time, used to be ferried around in a mini bus years back, perhaps still. Large lad used to dive, names have gone, but faces are still there.
If they were your guests, I take it you're hungover
Ongoing this end, but all's good.
