    Mutually compatible opinions

Posted by Earls on 10/11/2024, 13:42:08

    1) Edwards did brilliantly to get us up. We’ll never know if Jones would have got us promoted that season, but it looked unlikely at the time.
Edwards also excelled for the middle part of last season. After a tough start, he progressed the tactics so that we played football that was both entertaining and effective enough to finish above Burnley and Sheffield United.
    2) Edwards has coped badly since the start of the year. We had the “five cup finals” in our last five games to stay up, and only managed one draw. We’re now only out of the relegation spots on goals scored.
Edwards now appears to lack any plan B. We lack discipline and cohesion. Having kept so many of our best players - Kaminski, Doughty, Mengi, Adebayo, Morris, Chong, Bell - we should be at least mid-table, not 21st.
He clearly wants to leave. Saying “I don’t want to be divisive,” when he knows he will be after yesterday, shows Edwards has had enough. Assuming that happens, he deserves respect for what he achieved, but it’s also time.
    3) Sweet and 2020 have been the best board the club has ever had. Not only did they save the club, they got us into the Premier League just a decade after we were non-League.
They’re also finally getting a new stadium sorted. The club have tried to move out of KR since before any of us were born. 2020 will achieve it. That seems on track for 2027-28. One of the few things everyone has agreed on this season is how good those stadium plans look.
Given all that, if you’re making comments wrt Sweet about backhanders, his waistline and/or his background in sales, you’re a tit.
    4) The past two transfer windows have been shambolic, as is the club’s communication. 2020 are largely to blame for both. Sweet’s insistence on micromanaging the transfer budget has backfired. We had a good eye for a bargain throughout our rise from the National League, but we’d always buy players. That continued with the Premier League season: Kaminski, Mengi.
Why this last window was so poor should have been addressed in the club programme. Instead, stating promotion was the aim when that wasn’t remotely realistic in that window was a pressure that just didn’t need to happen.

Strange that so many people on social media platforms don't see the points made in number 3

I think if you’re under 18 you don’t really know, if you’re under 30 you probably don’t appreciate the gravity and effort at the time, and since for all I t’s been an upward path (and a long one in lutonsnhistory)
So for an old git like me who has been up and down more times than a yo-yo including the Watson challis’s, Gurneys, and Jaytens, perhaps I’m less panicky.
And can appreciate what impeding disaster really looks like.

Yes. Definitely a divide in some fans thinking, probably generational.

I wouldn’t mind betting that most of the posters on here with more unhappy views are younger, and don’t have the full knowledge or information as a basis for subsequent, often strongly held, opinions. I suspect if they did have all the knowledge and facts, they would see their angst largely disappear and remain posts to the facts about shit results.
Frustrating, but in a way you had to be there to know how bad it was and could have been, and how things now are more a hiccup or blip.
And, being through it all, older ones know we always come back stronger.

The ability to appreciate the 'bigger picture'
The new ground is just such an immense thing that some genuinely thought they would never see. It's a game changer as an ex manager would once say.

You started off very well and I agree with your sentiment.

Where you wrote “…2020 have been the best board the club has ever had…” I would challenge that. It should be “…2020 ARE been the best board our club, and possibly any true “club”, has ever had…”

The bit about Gary sweet micro managing playing budgets feels like heresay, that I strongly suspect was made up by a child or man-child on here or Facebook and has become a “Fact” (like the supposed dust up between Taylor and doughty that has no merit whatsoever as far as I can work out and observe) . Firstly, I’ve no idea how anyone would know that unless you are connected directly to the running of our club, in which case the person that “leaked” this business information is a complete Cnut. But doesn’t exist. Secondly , Gary sweet has said many many times that he takes the responsibility of being custodian of OUR club extemelt seriously. I believe him 100% given he is ultimately and legally responsible for it, I should explicit that he has good knowledge and control over all expenditure (and income). If he didn’t that would be negligent. And he’s clearly not that.

Knowing agents who deal with GS it’s not hearsay.
Having said that it’s worked brilliantly in the past for us so hard to criticise when it’s not now.
It’s strange we all laughed at the Stokes , Sunderland’s etc who fucked up despite having much bigger budgets than us…we now can compete but seem to be handling it badly.

It’s worked in the past, absolutely. But those agents know we have parachute payments. So, unlike in the past, we can pay the going rate. I certainly don’t think we should start paying £15m for players. But the reality is, £6m for a solid player like McGuinness is the going rate for a Championship centre-half.
We can’t both say “Where’s the money gone?” and moan we’ve overpaid on the one player we did buy.
Krauss is clearly great business. Why there weren’t more additions is a question to answer, which can be addressed without going into specifics and without demotivating the existing squad.

          Hmmm, "no plan B".

Hasn't he recently pretty much completely overhauled the style in which we play from possession-based, build from the back, patience to up and at 'em direct football?

"Coped badly since the start of the year"

With those injuries, in the Premier League, not sure anyone would have been able to do much with that situation.

          "He clearly wants to leave"
Maybe, but there's nothing "clear" about that.

I totally agree that he wants to leave.

And also that he's not delivering.

Which is why it seems utterly mad to either try to convince him to stay or persevere with him, hoping he will turn it around.

It is starting to feel like a long drawn out negotiation between Edwards and the board is going to be taking place.

However, I don't think it great comms for a club to own up to a poor window in the club programme. That's hardly going to give much confidence to the squad, particularly the new players.

I have never posted before but read with interest and sometimes despair.
Having supported the club since seeing Malcolm Macdonald as a boy I have hardly missed a home game I think we all need to stop & take a breath . We have been used to winning since John Still and expectations have been raised by the Play off win (which reduced me to tears)
Rob Edwards is one of the best managers we have ever had
but is learning on the job and made mistakes .
I admire Mark Robbins as a manager but he has got it wrong far more times than he has got it right and at Coventry worked with a bigger transfer budget than we have.
We have reached a crossroads and it can be either a Richard Money
Or John Still moment. I want the latter 100%
Do not let Johnny Come lately fans who have only known winning set the agenda! There are plenty of us who remember Braintree or even Hillingdon and need to stand up as one and get behind the board Rob Edwards and the team.
We are Luton we have learnt from past mistakes . We are not like all the rest and most of all Rob gets us and deserves time and supportCOYH

              Yes.

              I made this point below.

No explanation of why we have failed so badly in our transfer windows, none at all saying RE has had his hands tied behind his back regarding a pre season shambles.

Some will say who are we to ask, I disagree.

I think teams have wised up to our one dimensional football. Stop Doughty and the crosses coming in and a significant threat is greatly reduced
