Disappointment
Posted by Farhat on 10/11/2024, 11:53:40
We're all disappointed by this awful start to the season, of course we are. But let's get things into perspective. In every country, in every league, in every division, 95% of supporters are going to be disappointed, every season. We've just had 10 seasons of being in that other 5%. Unless you support one of the BIG clubs this is unprecedented in modern football.
But let's not forget we still have a club, still have the best run club in professional football (and no, they're not exempt from positive analysis or criticism). I understand that we now live in a "I want it all and I want it now" world, but sometimes just take a step back, take a pause for breath, and don't ever make it personal.
Because WE are the Town. WE are the f>ucking Town. And we ALWAYS get back on our feet.

Best run club in professional football? The commercial department says otherwise. Reasonable post from you for a change apart from that comment.

Sorry, we are not currently the best run club in professional football. There's more to it than just being prudent with finances.

Agree with some of that. However we are in the strongest financial position we have ever been in. And we’re recruiting as if we’re broke, whilst selling people aswell.
The frustrations are mainly because it could and should be SO much better this season. On the pitch and off it. The commercial dept are a joke. The friendlies were a joke. There’s been no shirts until recently. And the majority of the players don’t look upto it or interested.

I think the majority of our supporters understand the bigger picture. I first started going to games regularly in 1978. At the time we were an established Championship (division 2) club who were in and around the promotion spots. After all the ups and downs we are back in the same position, potentially that is. The team is struggling as is Rob. His post match interview sounded like a goodbye. If it is any decent fan will thank Rob for the good times. I jumped around like a 10 year old at Wembley when Coventry missed that penalty. You don’t experience that kind of emotion in live that often. I was proud of our team in the PL when we nearly pulled off survival against all the odds. However managers come and go as do players. We don’t. We remain supporters of this club until our dying day. I believe the club is in great hands. Like us the board of directors are supporters themselves which is rare in this day and age. In 2020 we trust.

But we didn't nearly pull off a miraculous escape against all the odds, did we ? We finished third from bottom, six points behind Forest, despite their points deductions.

We finished 3rd from bottom, above bigger spenders Burnley and Sheffield United, and weren't officially relegated until the last day of the season, even although you could argue second from last due to goal difference. That despite having an injury crisis. One pundit thought we'd be relegated by Christmas and opposition fans thought we'd break Derbys PL lowest points record. Looking at the PL now two of the promoted sides are in the bottom three and only former PL champions Leicester are above the relegation zone and they are struggling.
We're not in an existential crisis. We've a struggling team and manager which is an easier fix then saving the club from the abyss.
The default comparison when things are going badly shouldn't be 'but we nearly go bust.' Because by that metric, everything, even having Blackwell in charge again, is probably better.
The extreme "Just because we almost went bust in 2007, doesn't mean that should have any bearing on what we do now or later."
Of course it should, we always have to be mindful, like you say, it's not the only point of reference because it's an extreme but it should always be a guiding point.

That’ll serve us superbly in league one next season then.
The club has never been run with the aim of just having a club to support. That's not their expectation and it shouldn't be ours when we're struggling.
That's not ungrateful either, our journey is part of our history. But if that's the expectation we could talk ourselves out of dismissing any manager as might as well be watching Buckle manage us in the South Midlands League.
We've been run phenomenally well. And we'll be back soon.

“best run club in professional football“
Transfer windows? Injuries and conditioning?? Club merchandise??? The kit fiasco????
We only have your word we are well run, the CEO has lost his voice.

For once I do actually agree with you, that mantle is slipping. I think we’ve done exactly what GS said we wouldn’t and believed we’re bigger than we are, which has led to some poor decisions on transfers and merchandise. Stay up, regroup and move on has to be the plan now

GS is also morphing into the Billy big bollocks he asked us not to be.

You’d have to say a club slipping from the Premier League into a relegation battle in the Championship doesn’t smack of well manahed

It’s a football club, it’s whole purpose is to play football, if it’s struggling in its main purpose it’s struggling as a club
