    Some honesty from club

Posted by Russy on 10/11/2024, 10:23:45

Someone needs to explain how we can spend a season in the Premier, get relegated with parachute payments and invest nothing in the playing squad.

    The maths don't add up.

In addition we sold Barkley 6 mil, Giles 4 mil, ogbene 8 mil and reduced our squad size, losing Osho, kabore, lokonga, berry

We spent 6 mil on Mguiness and brought in second rate frees.

Oh apparently the stadium was financed prior to pro.otion

We spent some big money for us to try to stay up in the Premier League and held on ti players that probably cost a lot of money.

You don’t get to dictate who does what. The stadium was financed and since then changed design and been refinanced. All completely paid for. We readjusted the squad given the fact we no longer play in “the best league in the world”.

The consensus when we got promoted was that the Premier riches were free money that should be used to guarantee the long term future of the club, rather than spending millions on Ben Brereton Diaz or whoever to chase a few years as a yo-yo club.

We're a club that plays in a falling-down ground, went bust twice in the last 20 years and probably came closer than any of us realised to going bust again during lockdown.

We've been shit this season. Tactics, fitness, morale, all clearly big problems. I don't think that's any reason to rip up the overall strategic priorities of the club as a business and community asset.

It doesn't seem as if the club actually committed themselves to the strategy, though. Everything seems to be straddling some middle ground.

The 2 main choices were taking risks to stay up/go straight back up, or to take stock, consolidate, and aim for a 2027/8 push back to the Prem with seriously solid foundations.

We seem to be in the territory of the latter, but aren't making the right noises about it. The whole atmosphere and communication of the club needs to go back into fortress mode.

Mengi should've been offloaded at his peak value, and more players like Holmes hoovered up from the Championship, who are hungry for success and their shot at the big time.

Anybody who was linked to a big club move is going to struggle motivating themselves for a Championship relegation push.

That's a reasonable critique, and one I'd give more time to than Russy's original post.

I don't think any of us know what happened with Mengi. If his value was met, if a buyer pulled out at the last moment, if we decided not to sell because of missing other targets, if the intention was always to keep him.

In general, I wouldn't over-analyse individual players and individual decisions. Overall, the strategy since promotion has been quite clear; prioritise building the foundations of the club, while keeping a competitive but relatively cheap team. As Sweet said in the summer, last year's transfer business was done with 2 or 3 years in mind and most of those players (Andersen, Brown, Chong, Kaminski) are still around.

Certain players and transfers haven't worked out as planned, there have been mistakes, we've been riddled with injuries, the team is massively underperforming on the pitch. But I don't think the overall strategy is the wrong one.

PC increased capacity by 7.5k must be a fundamental reason for the lack of investment.

But don’t worry we will “give away” 5000 tickets per game so not highlight the monumental flaw in the changed design.

Beating Watford cannot be the limit of our ambition.

These issues have been so obvious throughout 2024.

Watford beat us 4-0 and we ended up getting promotion, currently the boot is on the other foot.

                                      “My agenda”

Poor transfers windows particularly when a better one in January could have kept us up.

And the deflectors and distractors on here who seem to be more intent on taking the heat off GS then getting answers to why January was such a disaster.

Edwards said we would end the month stronger. His words not mine.

This season’s malaise stems from that.

We end up signing injury prone sub standard players when we have millions in the bank.

I think that is a fair enough reason to have an “agenda”

And, if you were paying attention, you would know I agreed with much of what you said. The last 2 transfer windows were poor.

Thing is, I don't keep going on about it 24 hours a day, most days. But you're obsessed. It's incessant. Nowhere when we're winning, on here like a shot when we're losing. Saying the same old stuff and now you're taking pot shots about the stadium and looking at the absolute extreme negative scenario for that too

And you're taking enjoyment from it. You love us getting beat and struggling.

Most people who constructively complain, I don't have a problem with, as I understand and share some of their concerns. The majority of critical voices are genuine and just deflated with how things are unravelling and want to discuss why and what needs to be done to fix things. But you're different. There is just something a bit 'off' with you.

Enjoyment? A mind reader are you?

When you see a team sheet like yesterday’s you know what is coming and it stinks.

I didn’t mind when we had little or no money as it was part of the fun to challenge better off clubs with few resources.

But we are now cash rich and even made a profit in the last transfer window, but nobody dare ask how this could ever happen and why despite this we buy crocks and players at the very end of their career.

No. But it needs to be addressed at some level, instead of all the bullshit and deflection

Bullshit, on here! Really? But yes, we need a reset. RE will resign today or tomorrow I expect. The club & new manager will address it all so we can get behind the lads & escape relegation.
