We need to talk about Alfie

Posted by frak on 6/11/2024, 23:27:05

Everyone talks about how he is our best player but his balls in really are not that great. I hope he is not injured but I do think someone else should be sharing dead ball duties. There have to be other options. You can say his corner led to the goal but it should given the amount of balls he plays in!

This kind of speaks for itself . . .

That is a ridiculous stat as no one knows exactly what Doughty is aiming for except himself.
Maybe for balance let's see the stat where he doesn't accurately get his cross in. Again impossible to prove.

The only reason you think it's ridiculous is that it doesn't support your stupid, inane assertion that he is bad at delivering the ball.

But the inconsistencies in his crossing prove his isn't good at it. I don't need a stat for that it's there to see.

            Interesting set of stats.

Alter the setting to 'assists' and Doughty is in 5th place, our next two players are Krouss in 46th and Morris in 106th place.

Change it to 'accurate passes per 90' and our only player in the top 100 is Liam Walsh.

Change it to 'big chances missed' and the top player is . . . . Adebayo

Of course, non of the above are surprises to anyone who's watched our games this season

True enough and as "But" points out Alfie gets every opportunity.

It's obviously a decent return. Last night his delivery was varied with some very poor efforts but also some excellent ones, and of course the corner that gave us the goal.

Can you provide one for percentage of balls played that find their man? Of course he's going to be top of that on your link. No other team has the same player taking every single dead ball.

                    Prove it then .

The point remains though that he's producing a decent enough return.

That said, I do think we should vary the set piece takers a bit . . . Baptiste showed he could whip a mean ball in for example.

100% agreed. He takes all free kick and corners sooner or later one will lead to a goal.

He is our best option for a left sided attacking player obviously, but he is overrated. Lots of crosses but the vast majority have no quality or accuracy, another Championship club might take him, but a Premier League club, I would doubt it.
The high dinked free kicks last night were awful, then a couple of driven corners were excellent. Lots of inconsistencies in his game, would still rather have him than not.

I think a mid-lower PL club would be very interested in him. English, left-footed and proven to be capable at that level. Is he great against top quality right wingers? Probably not. But he is an excellent option for teams who want to put crosses into the box rather than tippy-tappy through the middle.
