    “Bobbers Stand Club” tin

Posted by Blank Expression on 4/11/2024, 11:46:06

    Alright,

For those interested I’ve now got hold of the mysterious little cardholder thing. (Have dropped HH an email about handing it over for the museum).

    Original thread: https://members.boardhost.com/lutonoutlaws/thread/1729422534.html

A few more pics below to show its size and the inside. It’s much smaller than I thought. I wonder if it was to collect ticket stubs, if that was a thing back then?

The two restrictors inside indicate a card holder.

You are probably ahead of me, but if you hover your mouse over a picture, a image thingy appears in top right. Click on it and you get lots of similar boxes.
Most are cigarette holders. (Roll-ups, for the thinner boxes) But click on the open box and you get "calling card holder".
Could the owner have been a salesman who just spotted this in a shop and thought it would be something different for his cards ?

Yes, we just don't know. It may not have been made or used for football or the Bobbers purposes.

What size were match tickets back then? (To all: please feel free to add obvious age related comments! 🙂

I know in your youth you had Fred Flintstone stone tablets but here's a couple from the Golden era. So credit card size from early on.

              Brilliant!
That 1899 Bolton one is pretty wacky isn't it? I know that cartoons were very popular then but the Japanese theme seems random - unless you know some connection?

The Japanese one is a mystery. The best bet is that is was random to fool the touts and forgers. Bolton was a big FA Cup game - record attendance at the Bury Park Enclosure in Dunstable road - we have a photo of the match action. Bolton in white, the photographer has his back to Bury Farm, now Kenilworth Road.

AAArgh, the image thingy is down atm so I'll post it later

Possibly a vision, due to the mercury poisoning in the hat making process ?

Well, football was the opiate of the people!

Not for me thanks mate, I’ve only just brushed me teeth.

It’s the little bits on the side that make me think it was designed to hold in a card or a medal or something? Could well have been used as a snuff box though I suppose. The bloke who it belonged to was a definite heavy smoker. Have spoken to a few of the family and no one has any idea why he had it though. Has seemingly no connection to Luton. (Belatedly saw your reply about Mayors this morning - definitely different Dillinghams!)

Maybe he simply saw it in a house clearance type shop and liked it. It does seem odd though, that nobody can do better than guess. Worth getting the club to put picture in programme ? Or simply finding the oldest season ticket holder and ask them.
