So, refereeing/laws of the game. Don't get me started!

Posted by Norriechatter on 2/11/2024, 11:48:39

In the last 2 games we've had Doughty booked for taking a quick free kick, and last night Bell was booked for delaying a free kick!

Surely the officials can't have it both ways?

How quick is quick? How long is a delay?

If the West Brom player was looking to take a quick free kick last night, would he have been booked?

Unfortunately, footage shows the referee showing Alfie the whistle and telling him to wait. His yellow card is, technically, delaying the restart. The ref went to speak to speak to a player before continuing so had not authorised the kick to be taken. By taking it players reacted and the referee had to whistle to stop the unauthorised restart before finishing his word to the original player he wanted to speak to, meaning a delay in the authorised restart. It was better when the referees just held up their whistle and added the time on. There was less delay than there is now.

In answer to your last paragraph, if the ref instructed don't take it,then you run the risk of a card, harsh but still a risk. Arguably Doughty was signalled to wait, but did Doughty see that signal? Only Doughty knows.

If the ref doesn't give an instruction it's very unlikely you will be carded.

However that Prick Madeley couldn't wait to get his cards out.

Delaying a free kick is a yellow card if it's deemed deliberate.

Given how long West Brom were delaying taking pretty much everything last night it does seem harsh to have booked Bell for delaying it a fraction of that time.

To be fair though, the distance their players decided to walk up the pitch before taking a throw meant there was always going to be a bit of a delay .

My main issue with the ref last night was letting WBA drag out every restart from the get-go. By not stepping in early, he set a slow pace for the whole game, and WBA milked it, totally killing the flow.

              100% that.

I wish the refs would show a sense of urgency about keeping the game moving but they simply don't, quite the opposite.

I'm still struggling to get my head round how poor WBA (and Watford) are/were and they're near the top end of the table. Maybe it was an off-night for them

It's a poor division this season

I'd like to suggest that we played well enough in both games which contributed to it but it's hard to avoid the fact that they were both very poor. The West Brom goalie and his distribution was absolutely hysterical at times.
