    Quick free kick

Posted by STB on 1/11/2024, 17:02:11

Anyone know the actual rule for the quick free kick, and if it's taken 'too soon' you get booked?

Never in my life have I seen a yellow for a quick free kick, like Doughty last week.

Wonder if the rules say it is, or what makes it a booking or not.

I think the ref indicated for Doughty to wait, but Doughty probably didn't see the hand signal from the ref as it wasn't really that clear, only Doughty and the ref know if there was a verbal instruction.
Ref could have shown a bit of common sense and just ordered a retake, but he was determined to pull out his yellow cards for some reason.
The taking off a quick free kick obviously isn't a yellow card but after he indicated wait the ref can produce a card for not following his instruction.
Could have appealed it in the old days, but no appeal on yellows these days.

But there was absolutely no reason why the ref would want Doughty to wait. No Coventry players were close enough to affect anything.
The idea always was that the ref would ask the player if he wanted a quick free kick, and if he said yes, then get on with it, but don't moan if you cock it up.

          Ah I getcha.

100% it was common sense to not book. Ridiculous to yellow for that. Shocking all game.
