    Simon Oxley interviews RE

TLDR; Despite the relief of 3 points, overwhelming emotion was frustration that Town lost control of the game by not scoring the second goal. Wants to be brave by passing out from the back rather than just clearing lines when under pressure. Replacing Walters with Doughty was always the plan.

Sod that, just launch it, turn their fullbacks and get into them.

I hate modern football so much.

youre gonna have a frustrating season then coz Rob's plan is to turn us into a draw-them-in-and-beat-the-press side so beloved of modern coaches. There is probably data to support why this is better than launch it but you need the right players.

Can someone explain why Mengi takes a short goal kick to Kaminski who then kicks long? Genuinely interested. I suppose it means that the opposition is stretched? But then, so are we.

Because Kaminski tends to kick them into touch!

My frustration with our attempt at “modern football” is two fold. Firstly, if you are going to play out through the press, you need to drill it time and again in training, and I haven’t seen any evidence that this is the case (I may be wrong obviously). My other issue is that teams seem to pass through our press at will, so either we haven’t set it up properly or our players aren’t very good at it (where’s Harry Cornick when you need him).

There's this... (Explains why Brighton do it)

I don't see the point of that goal kick routine (other than to leave yourselves open to yellow cards) but I have seen other teams do it this season. Seems a risky tactic to me but I'm sure that RE and other managers have their reasons.

Our back three, good as they are, are not technically capable of passing out through the press. Burke was a proper defender with his blocks on Saturday but in possession his distribution wasn't great. Made worse by Doughty playing him a few passes short when Millwall players were buzzing around. Rob wants them 'to be brave' but they're not John Stones.

There were loads of short passes on Saturday, Pellys was the worst but by no means the only one, that brought far too much unnecessary pressure in the final third.
