What has the Trust ever done for us (1)?

SoLYD was delighted to provide hospitality in the Eric Morecambe Lounge prior to our recent game against Glasgow Rangers.

An unexpected pre-match appearance from David Pleat and Wayne Turner added hugely to the enjoyment of all those in attendance. Reflecting on his two stints as our Manager, it was clear just how proud David was of the opportunities given to young Hatters, including Wayne. He also spoke of the way football has changed at all youth levels over the last 30 years, and in particular how rules largely devised by the bigger clubs have made it ever more difficult for other clubs to retain their brightest young talent.

In that light it was thrilling to watch the current squad of young Hatters go toe to toe with Rangers and earn a well-deserved 3-2 victory.

The club’s decision to seek Category 2 status will of course provide a big boost to our Academy, but both David and Wayne emphasised that there still won’t be a level playing field with the larger clubs, and both urged SoLYD to continue with the support that it has provided since its formation in 2009. Having provided the Academy with two defibrillators this year and contributed to a fund that lowers the financial barriers to less fortunate youngsters to access professional coaching SoLYD remains committed to helping to reduce the vast gap that exists between Luton and the giants of the game at youth level.

Due to the Clubs generosity in waving all costs this event raised over £1,000 for SoLYD. We intend to host further events ahead of U21 and Academy events this season so please keep an eye out for these.
