See Villa have defended their decision to significantly up the cost of tickets for the 4 group games they are playing, in order to raise revenue in line with the need to increase their turnover and help them comply with Financial Fair Play rules. They state that rich benefactors cannot cover such costs under the present rules. Clearly this is another example of why the rules are wrong, since it seems supporters are to be targeted rather than those who own the clubs and are best placed to finance the cost of playing European football. I thought these rules were brought in to stop clubs racking up debt that would cause clubs to go bankrupt if the owner(s) were to leave, not to cover these eventualities. It is absurd that Newcastle cannot compete (with all the wealth in their boardroom) without breaking the rules and perpetuates the status quo of those who regularly play in Europe (and which Villa now seek to join).
