Any historian worth their salt acknowledges the existence of a bloke called Jesus who lived around the Middle East around the time the Bible suggests.

The question was never, "did Jesus exist?", but rather, "who do you claim Jesus to be? The Son of God, or a complete lunatic?"
Think about it. Research it. Explore it. Then come back with a serious point.

Jesus has been a popular name through the centuries.
There is no doubt there was someone called Jesus as you say, but the rest is nonsense.
Religion on the whole has done more harm than good in my opinion.

There are so many religions, which in my eyes proves they are all wrong.

Because of ignorance people needed something to believe in when there wasn't the enlightenment there is now

Well we're clearly not going to agree but what about all the sources and stories about the specific Jesus that the Bible mentions? And you can't say it's all nonsense when it talks about things, people, and places that existed.

Yes, some religion has done a lot of harm, but more harm than good is pure conjecture and not proveable either way.

It also certainly does not follow that just because there are so many religions... proves they are all wrong.

Seems a bit of twisted logic there.

Finally there are some incredibly intelligent people who believe all the Jesus stuff. It's not about enlightenment at all. Enlightenment is actually another form of ignorance.

But there is no logic to believing in any religion.

When western people left Europe they found places where people worshipped idols do you think your beliefs are superior or more meaningful than those that believed in totems.

I am not looking for an argument, I have always been interested in why people believe in things like God and ghosts when there is so little reason to do so.

I really appreciate the fact that we're able to have a grown up conversation with different opinions without resorting to insults (I can be as bad as anyone at times for that).

I always try to take Jesus out of religion. Religion often twists the teachings of Jesus for it's own purposes (whatever they may be, sometims for good and sometimes for worse). And translation can sometimes challenge our traditional thoughts and ideas which is why getting a holistic view of the whole cannon of scripture is so important helping us see the big picture of the story of God rather than getting bogged down in, and arguing over, smallest details in any given passage or story.

Religion fails us because of the different versions and the reactions of the zealots (not the Jews who had a strop with the Romans) of each faction.

It is/was, simply a clever ploy to enforce law and order. But only works with a single religion, rather than multiple.

Faith and belief are quite different. Religion may fail but Jesus doesn't.
