    Numbers don’t add up

    Posted by H on 14/8/2024, 19:26:37

Luton got 180 million for one season in the premiership which is fantastic and will hugely help with the new stadium, this year the received 43 million in parachute payments, with the payments received from Barkley and Gilles coming to nearly 10 million that’s over 50 million so far in the coffers for this season, we have signed 2 players for free so let’s just say we spent 20 million of the 53 million you would get 3 or 4 really good championship players for 20 million and it is my belief we would be challenging for play -offs at least , for me it makes no sense at all that with 2 weeks of the window to go we still haven’t signed any more players it is obvious to everyone especially after the Burnley game we need players in , so I will be slagged big time for this but all I will genuinely say is the numbers don’t add up.

      You’re right.

      Your numbers don’t add up.

But I’m glad someone raised it …..

Even ignoring all the other errors, I don't think "2 players for free" is correct - Arsenal would be due compensation for Walters, wouldn't they? Undisclosed, of course

All this talk of failing to replace Lockyer in January, it had actually slipped my mind that we still haven’t brought in a proper left-sided centre-back since Kal Naismith left in May 2022!

It’s even more crucial now if Edwards is going to persist with same formation and tactics.

Thankfully Bell stayed fit for most of the promotion season.

Ignoring your unsafe assumptions and dubious numbers can I ask if you mean £20 million on transfer fees? Because it's not as simple as that

                https://members.boardhost.com/lutonoutlaws/msg/1723626729.html

It's mostly about wages and wage structures. If we break our wage structure to sign certain players you either a) piss off the existing squad or b) have to raise the salaries of much of our existing squad to the level of any new signing's demands to avoid the current players getting pissed off

Have you included that in your calculations? Because a raise of, say, £5K per week for most senior members of our squad will add another few million onto the budget

It's been a difficult transfer window. We need reinforcements but I don't think it's a reluctance to spend from the club. Just agents and players looking at us as an ex-Prem club and thinking 'kerching'

How do other clubs do it?

Players have always had different salarie and always will.

I'd be very surprised if senior players at other clubs aren't paid relatively equally. Is Haaland paid more than De Bruyne? I don't know. But if you have some examples, happy to hear about them

Youth and younger players is a different situation but we have a bunch of footballers who are at ages and stages of their careers where they would consider themselves 'senior'* and I reckon it'd cause some unrest if someone came in getting paid, say, £20K per week from the off, when others remained on £15K

Every contract can be different, you don't pay a full back the same as a good goalscorer. It's never been like that, certain players will always command more it's part and parcel of gootball at every level.
Do you think Mbappa gets the same money as Bellingham or Carvahal?

Would you be happy if you found out colleagues were being paid two or three times as much as you for the same job?

You are correct, your numbers don't add up.

The £180m is the value of the playoff and includes the parachute payments.
