    Fans expectations

Posted by Cybermat on 13/8/2024, 14:10:38

Ok, I'll happily get battered for this.
We were not ready for the PL, not even close. It was a cherry with no cake. The upside is that it allowed us to accelerate our development, stadium, infrastructure, academy...and if some investors reaped some reward too, then fair play to them. The downside is that we (some) feel entitled to more success straight away- 'all this money...why not spend it?'. The reality is that we will, under the current owners, invest carefully for the long term. We are not close to Burnley or Leeds as a club, and until we have all the other boring things in place we won't be. In 2 weeks I believe we will be stronger and last night was awful, I agree. But, the only thing I would criticise the owners for is the quality of communication with the fans. Open up the books a bit...it's our club. If that is not improved, then I do really fear for this season. We don't need, or want, another Ronnie Henry moment just yet - but it may come.

I get your overall point but the fact is we were the third best team in the league and the season before were in the top 6. We were clearly one of the better teams in the Championship over 92 games so we were more than deserving of our place in the top flight.

Agreed our infrastructure isn't as good as some but equally that hasn't stopped us from competing with the bigger clubs at this level over the last 5 years and last night just seemed so far off the pace. More fight in GJ first game at this level in 2019 against 'boro than we saw last night.

Hopefully just an anomaly and a blip. A big test of character coming on Saturday.

Didn’t just come up with conclusions I listened to Edwards talking us returning to the PL and expected far better. Is that really unreasonable?

          Indeed.

Unless you are of the opinion that it is possible to mislead your core fan base and believe that they are too uninformed to recall what you said before the season started.

The "Jordan Clark column" can be binned too.

Ronnie Henry moment..don't criticise him..he was better than any luton defender on the pitch last night..the manager at the time was tactically superior to the idiot we have now..Ronnie a legend along with all others in that squad

Funny, I remember JS constantly being slated as "tactically poor" and "having no Plan B", particularly in his later days. Also "lost the dressing room".

                Likewise NJ.

Must be something about the club that attracts this type of manager.

A reasonable expectation for this season is for us to compete strongly for, and make, the play offs. Last night’s result doesn’t mean we won’t do that, but we need to be stronger in 2-3 weeks time.

We aren’t asking for the club to spend all the money.

We did expect though some spending on the basis that they want automatic promotion and received 140m prem money to date

The season commenced last night. While it is possible that the team will improve in the coming weeks, there is a risk that we will have accrued no points by then and that players will be reluctant to join. Furthermore, we may be required to pay a higher premium due to the knowledge that other clubs view us as desperate.

Furthermore, with regard to the communication aspect. Almost a year ago, we suffered the loss of a key member of the communications team. You subsequently identified this as a contributing factor to the delay in PC communications. Almost a year later, the same club comms issues have yet to be resolved, and you agree with Mat's assessment.

It would be beneficial to understand why this issue has not been addressed. The situation with the shirts is a prime example of a problem that requires attention and transparency.

From an external perspective, it appears that Gary's opinions carry significant weight, and he effectively serves as the head of communications too.

You'll never hear a manager of a team just relegated from the PL say it's not the aim to bounce back straight away.

Fans aside, he and the club would be ripped to shreds by the media if that happened.

Yep, and that may have been a mistake, but no-one takes every manager's utterance as a fact. He's paid to be positive, but he looks a bit a shadow of himself at the moment.

We finished last season ahead of Burnley and Sheff Utd but they both re-grouped and improved during the close season while we sat on our hands and did nothing. Which means we have effectively taken a backward step, probably the first one since we were promoted from the Conference. The players looked demotivated and under-prepared last night. Something isn't right.
