My take
Posted by Kenny B Block on 13/8/2024, 8:48:57
After not posting all summer I refrained from my opinion last night in the heat of the moment
This morning it hadn’t really changed. Last season I was loaned at for calling out RE for in game management and being tactically naive he showed it again last night.
There was some positives I thought we controlled possession well a lot but always at the back and not in positions we could hurt Burnley. Also other than 15 mins after half time the tempo of build up was way to slow again 3/4 touch football when we need it to be 1/2
Felt kaminski should of done better with the first two goals being to slow to come off his line and close it down, but the forwards always the favourite in a 1on1
Thought it was a harsh score line on the young lads who tried there best but were brought in to a game that was a step to high
Ade looked miles off but always takes time to play his was into a season a luxury we don’t have if we want to fight near the top
And morris I feel the weight of the arm band is to heavy for him he tries to hard in the wrong areas of the pitch searching to be involved. His touch was poor also our forwards just didn’t hold anything up all night
We showed some good signs that can give us hope against probably the league favourites but we need reinforcements fast and Edwards to wake up and find a plan b because at the moment plan B is to revert to plan A

I don't think Walters looked out of place at all. I also thought that Nelson, although caught out for the first goal showed some really good touches. Is he a central midfielder though?
They were genuine positives for me as was seeing Baptiste looking fit for almost a full game.
Ogbene also looked good at times against really tough defenders.
It's not much and I'm not pretending it wasn't a comprehensive defeat but I've seen bad starts turn good before enough times to know they are the kind of things that *can* matter as the season goes on.

RE seems to have had some sort of brain fade pitching in youngsters against one of the strongest teams in the division, especially when experienced alternatives were available.

Scorelines most certainly was not harsh. Could well have been a much bigger defeat. Absolutely no positives can be taken from last night. 3/5 at the back does not work. 2 upfront does not work. Waiting until the 80th minute to make your first sub does not work. Trying to fool the fans by saying you saw some good things does not work. Last season was a free hit, this season the pressure will be in Edwards, especially if there are many more non performances like last night

A back 3 and 2 up front worked very well for us when we were promoted. The problems we have right now are:
Lack of experience at centre back Lack of an organiser at centre back Lack of a defensive midfielder
If the back 7 is
Kaminski Walters Burke / new experienced CB Mengi Bell Doughty Nakamba / new DM
Then the formation would not be the issue. Though I still wouldn’t go as gung ho as we have been doing.

That's about right Sandgrounder.I can't believe some of the insulting comments made on here by the 'experts'

Burnley were a class above us in several areas. They look very good and their speed upfront caused the often unprotected defence big problems- they could have easily scored 6.We need Nakamba or a player like him to protect the back line - Baptiste is good but not quite in that mould. Its harsh to call RE and Mick and the management team running the show naeve - they are working with a far below strength squad .Thats the root cause of how we find ourselves at the start of the season.

Was it not naïve to ask 3 youngsters to make their championship full debuts (I think, Johnson may have already played) against one of the favourites for the title whilst having players with considerable experience of this division sat on the bench.
I want us to succeed but last night raised a huge amount of questions, hopefully the club and the management have the answers

I like RE and he fits the Luton mould with the type of person he is. But is in game management is and always has been lacking. His a reactive coach and not proactive.
At 2-1 we had all the momentum it was time to turn the screw make a few changes and try to find the equaliser instead as always he left it to late and made a change once we conceded a third
It’s a common theme of his in game management and always has been. His a young coach and will learn and develop he certainly talks a good game of wanted to learn and progress

To be fair Burnley really did a hoofroyd on us and stopped that momentum when one of theI players went down ‘injured’

They also knew where and when to make a tactical foul, and who needed to make it, something we don't seem to have learned yet.

Should be used to that by now, everyone does it. You train and coach the players mindset to overcome that.

I agree to an extent. But momentum is quite a mercurial thing.
