Lack of New Signings

Consider the following possible scenario:
When we won promotion last year, Gary & Co worked out a three-year playing budged based on 1 x PL money, plus parachute 1, plus parachute 2. i.e it took account of possible/likely relegation at the end of last season.
Players were then signed in 2023 on contracts that reflected our income over the next three years, not just 2023-24, and who were happy to play for us in either the PL or the Championship.
Consequently they may not have to take a pay cut following relegation, so no mass exodus of our best players (so far anyway).
Most pundits and fans seem to think we have a pretty good squad when they are all fit, the two loanees have been replaced by Walters and Baptiste.
so no need for 8, 9 or 10 new players in the window as we have seen in the past - just a bit of cover in midfield and defence - 2 at most.

Pretty much bang on. This time last year when we were signing Andersen, Brown, Ogbene, everyone was saying (sometimes critically) that we were building a Championship squad for the following season. That remains the case.
The obvious spanner in the works is that all the defenders are injured and Osho and Lockyer have left the squad. Reinforcement there is important, but they are working on trying to get someone in.

This mostly is correct I think. Other than the fact that all players have definitely had to take a reduction in salary for relegation but not back down to where they were 2 years ago.
People worried about signings have to bear in mind that keeping one of our best players is better than bringing in a new one.
What fans foolishly generally base their judgement on is how many fee paying signing a club make in any given window. What we have to recognise is that if we keep this squad intact having just had them all have a season in the PL it will be aking to signing another 8-10 players this window.
It's clear we need 1 or 2 to cover in key positions but its also very clear that they're working their backsides off to get them and we won't overspend, rightly.
We need more quality in the middle That is obvious
We need a quality central defender to replace Osho That is obvious

Baptistes fitness history is not good. We can ignore Locks sadly at this stage.Burke and Mads fitness record is poor.Bell and Brown have missed a lot of football and they need to get match fit not just physically fit.I think some fans are in denial. It's obvious how thin the squad is. We might be lucky on injuries and a couple of young players coming through but a club like Luton shouldn't have to rely on that much luck.I keep saying to myself their record is very good but somehow we've got to where we are.
We’ve lost three central midfield players and signed one, it looks very sparse in that area so I’d hope we get a couple in there. I also think we need another central defender. The best value though, particularly for loans, comes at the end of the window so we might be a bit light for the first 2 or 3 matches
I'm sure someone said something similar on here not too long back but I also think, in a way, the club is also let down by a major lack of critical journalism. Local newspapers aren't what they once were and I don't think they ask the questions they perhaps should be doing so at times.

Good points, particularly about the pay cuts. I suspect you are right and a proportion of the parachute payments have been allocated to the wage bill.
Assessments need to be done at the end of the window. It’s a sellers market till the last week, then the clubs with dollar get the upper hand. Trust 2020 and RE fella.

That's a very sensible post. Are you sure you know where you are?
Naby Keita has fallen out with the folks at Werder Bremen. Don't know if he has been an arse or not. Could try a low cost deal to put him back in the spotlight....
