The board are in a bit of a no win situation, teams and players are no doubt putting up their valuations as they know we have a bit of money, we have a pay/recruitment structure that seems to have worked to now, but if they are now 'forced' by clubs and supporters to pay £10/12m+ for (lets be honest these days bang average) players and possibly break that structure how many supporters will then say why didn't you do that in the prem?
