Why are the board so reluctant to spend any money?

Posted by King Tubby on 3/8/2024, 20:42:48

I understand we’re putting money aside for the stadium build but we’re getting a large chunk in parachute payments and will have more money than we could ever have dreamed of a few years ago.

I love the board and will never say a bad word about them but they need to back Rob Edwards and give him a decent transfer budget to bring in 2-3 quality players. Would have been ideal to have bought them in before the pre-season as any players we buy now will take time to bed in.

If we keep the squad we have, we’ll finish mid-table at best in my opinion.

Just spend money...or spend it wisely?
Does anyone know how many, or who, we've enquired after? Should Sweet tell us of every player the club is interested in?
Also now, when we step in for a player, the phrase ' parachute payment' flags up to the prospective seller and prices increase.

Spot on. We all know Gary Sweet loves a bargain, but we need to pay for what we need. For example, I would be amazed if Tom Holmes was high up on the recruitment team’s centre-back list, but Sweet all over getting a player on the cheap!

I dont, it’s just my opinion! I used to live near Reading, and know several of their fans who were very surprised we signed him. Nelson Abbey is the player they rated.

Needless to say, I will get behind him and all the players on Monday night. I hope Holmes isn’t the Lockyer replacement we’ve desperately needed since January. Happy to be proven wrong.

Ironically that is actually the point of that parachute money, to spend it to help the relegated clubs have some advantage both on stabilising wages and replacing players who back up to PL clubs.

What makes you think the board are 'reluctant to spend money' as RE says he has funds and is actively pursuing deals (latest time after today's game)?

Very obviously trying to do deals, with full support of the board

Reading between the lines, I think it sounds like we’re not offering the sign on fee and wages that our targeted players are after. Maybe we are offering big promotion bonuses again, but players want guaranteed money! Edwards said after today’s game:

“We’ve got to stay true to what we do as well. We have tried hard and we are working on things hard but people have got to want to come to this football club, to join Luton.

“I don’t like using the word project, you hear that one all the time, but coming in to be a part of what we want to do. And that’s important”

That is right Hippo there are a limited number of players who will buy into what we offer. Compare our ground and facilities to others at the level and wages offered. An awful lot of ducks to line up. Surely we’ve all noticed the type of player we’ve been able to recruit. No club, out of contract, no sell on value, poor injury record or personal issues. Usually tick at least two of those boxes. Most will also be unproven at our level.

Since Lockyer collapsed at Bournemouth it’s been obvious we need to replace him. We haven’t.

Osho’s contract was up this summer and he’s made noises that he wants to leave. No one has arrived to replace him.

Burke is very fragile. Mads and Bell are long term injured and won’t play before Christmas.

Yes the injured ones will hopefully return but to not have a replacement lined up for Locks and now Osho has left us incredibly light. Whether paying fees or signing out of contract players we should have had deals over the line by now. We need to hit the ground running this year, and not be hoping the injured lads return quickly and can play until the end of the season.

I get annoyed on social media when people say we don’t need to replace Potts because he was injured all last season!

We were playing Hashioka, Kaboré, Johnson and even Doughty at centre-back. If Potts is fit or we have another player, then that doesn’t happen!

We seem to be sleep walking into another defensive disaster.

Lack of cover last year meant players were rushed back and then out longer when re-injured.

Concerning that RE is hoping to get 1 or 2 when we need at least 4.

Maybe we've been in for plenty and they haven't come off. We've had 10 years of not being let down. How about trying to be positive about who we've kept, cos I'm amazed that we've managed that so far.

I called out Jones at the start of the 22/23. season. One of only a few who said that he had taken his eye off the ball and was ‘brave’ enough to suggest he needed to step up or walk. We saw what happened when he finally did. An example was not playing Locks, which at the time I was very critical of. There was interest if you recall from clubs in taking Tom on loan as he wasn’t guaranteed a starting place.

As for the Brighton game. It’s on record of me saying that winning that game cost us ultimately, particularly as it was such a resounding win.

It was close to deadline day and I argue that had we lost we may have taken the decisions to go into the transfer market, I think the euphoria of that win meant we lost focus and the club believed the squad was good enough despite the fact that we had little to no cover in many key positions.

                              As was then proven.

We are at a similar crossroads but I have already said that and agreed not to keep flogging the same story.

It was also the time “Cuba” suggested that Dion was given more of a chance, something I have repeatedly since acknowledged was misplaced.

Although Jones must have listened because he gave him a new extended contract…..

Because the board and Edwards believe the squad we have once they are fully fit have enough to challenge for promotion in the same way they believed we were good enough to stay up in January and decided not to spend money. Only time will tell if they are proved right.

Doesn’t our current situation with injuries show how thin our squad is? As soon as we have a couple of players injured, we look vulnerable.

Our current defence being a case in point.
