Expecting a slow start this season

    Posted by Carroll’s elbow on 3/8/2024, 15:43:09

Loathe as I am to join the doom club, I’m concerned that we’re going to start this season really slowly.

Disjointed pre-season, so many players missing to try to catch up on fitness and sharpness.

Our actual performances haven’t been great and we’re not carrying any momentum in to the season.

Unless we can get a couple of quality players in, loan or perm, someone like a McAtee (the younger brother from City) to be quality possession and ball carriers, too much rests on Chongs shoulders this season.

Like all, hope I’m wrong, but the signs aren’t great. If we do start slowly, Rob is going to be under pressure for the first real time since he took charge.

Don’t think it’s ‘doom merchant’ to make a fair assessment on the situation, as it stands.

Part of the concern is that we’re clearly adopting a different recruitment strategy, of looking to sign players later in the window, to obtain ‘high value’ signings. This differs from our transfer approach previous under 2020/ NJ of recruiting early, to allow new signings a pre season to acclimatise.

It’s a risky tactic, because the way I see it, if we’re still looking short in the last week of the window, selling clubs will likely inflate their fees further; or if we’re competing for high calibre loan players, there’s every chance other champ clubs will also be competing with us.

Considering how disjointed our squad looks, most people (without rose tinted specs on), will say it’s a fair assessment that we will start slowly.

Friendlies have absolutely no bearing on how we will start the season.
We have terrible prep seasons in TH e past and won promotion.
As for all the nonsense talked about transfer policy the only people who know are those at the club and that's as it should be, everything else is just speculation

Friendlies might not have much bearing, but the wholes in the squad will, that’s precisely the point.

What nonsense are you referring to?

Funny how we can see that but the club can't. Pure arrogance/ignorance to think any different.

1 win in the last 17 competitive games.
This was always likely to be on the cards.
I just hope we can get some belief back.

Winning is a habit, so is losing. Especially if the atmosphere turns sour. Just some sort of update on the injured players would help

Football can change very quickly but we have enough quality to have a decent season.
Jones team has pretty much gone now so this is now Edwards that can be judged properly.

                    Injured players are still injured.

Update complete. Not sure how that now helps in the slightest.

Cos it was injuries that f*cked us last season, and it would be nice to know where things are with them. Get those players back and all will be well

Well if we sack him it will cost us a fortune seeing as he's only just signed a four year extension to his contract.
