    Englands midfield options

Posted by Ramridge Raider on 21/6/2024, 14:15:09

Assuming the TAA experiment has been consigned to the dustbin, Southgate has probably three options for the next game.

Option 1) and my preferred line up would be Rice holding, Bellingham player deeper as an eight and Foden operating as the 10. Gordon and Saka out wide to give pace.

Option 2) play Mainoo or Wharton next to Rice and Foden stays out left. From the little I've seen of both players, they seem very comfortable to receive the ball on the half turn and play forward. Both also seem comfortable on the ball in congested areas.

Option 3) Gallagher to play the pivot next to Rice. I really hope Southgate doesn't choose this option but I have a horrible feeling Gallagher will start. He's obviously a model pro but is like an excitable puppy, loads of energy but keeps tripping over his own legs and running into things!

Southgate has an opportunity to turn things around but I think his natural caution will take over and we exit the tournament in similar fashion to the Iceland debacle.

Option 1 was my preference prior to the tournament, and I still firmly believe this is the most efficient way forward. However, Southgate will go with option 3.

If Southgate insisted on continuing with two number 6s, Id go with wharton and rice. Wharton looks more of a natural DM, whereas Mainoo is more of a box to box player, and lacks the positional awareness required of a dm.

I hate this number thing. No.6 was a centre-half more often than not; and no.8 a striker.

The idea Harry Kane will ever be dropped is fantasy stuff, Southgate is probably regretting the couldn't bring on Henderson yesterday.

Would prefer to see Palmer in next to Bellingham, no need to have two in front of the defence, just need Rice there. Or bring Foden in and get a proper wide man out there, him coming short or narrow all the time gives unreliable options out left.

Bellingham should have been hooked at half time yesterday, seems to have got off scot free from the criticism presumably because everyone's having a pop at Southgate, but that "performance" from him yesterday was a scandal.

Some intelliogent good posts here but doesn't it just show the options and ideas Southgate is bombarded with from his advisers probably , pundits, and others. And some might be right- but which ones!!!!

blows my mind why we play 2 x cdm against dross.

agree wrt bellingham, he spent the whole game bleeting on to the ref. hes better than that ffs.

theyre all as frustrated as we are with that cnuts tactics and style.

Bellingham looked as perplexed as most of the players to be fair.

Personally, I thought he tried to hard to be a world beater. Trying to beat three or four players and losing possession time after time.

option 1 but why have we not even seen gordon yet?

he will play gallagher who is quite frankly abysmal.

the sooner this fukkin lunatic goes the better.

I've not been able to Gallagher seriously since Barkley took the piss against him.

He was so clearly a level below

                          dont.

an out of (club) form JG is better than those midfielders on the bench.

hes made some criminal decisions in the past few weeks.
