A bang average manager, never achieved anything of note in the domestic game. Has been blessed with an abundance of talented English players and his ridden on the back of their ability. Talks a good talk and would probably have made a very good counsellor as his skill is in building interpersonal relationships. However that isn't the main requirement in his current role. He is tactically blind and unable to see the simple things that would make all the difference, eg his refusal to use Cole Palmer for example, choosing Gallagher instead. He is finally being found out having previously benefited, as already mentioned, by having the good fortune to have some of the most talented footballers this country has ever produced at his disposal. Unfortunately he fits the FAs low bar re. tactical nous (look how much of a career they gave Steve McLaren for example). He's a safe option, will toe the line, won't achieve any notable success. Anyone that thinks we could get results against teams like Spain or Germany is frankly deluded in my opinion. We have the players, but not the manager.

Not sure about this abundance of talented players tbh. That said a half decent manager would have steered us to a win last night.

That really is a work of revelation, thank you.

I ranted several times on here last night about it and I'm still pretty annoyed by it.

Considering the players and the length of time the manager has had it's up there with one of the worst England games I've ever watched. It's very evident there is no coaching or strategy. There is no identity or cohesion or partnerships in that team. No one seems to know their role or responsibility.

It's like he picks players based on their performances for their club and then tells them to do the exact opposite for their country.

I think he will step down at the end of the tournament and probably take a desk job with the FA. He's that sort of dull, box ticking character the FA like.

For an international team (that has a lot of good players - I'm not giving Southgate the excuse that others sometimes give, that these players are over-hyped. I think it's a really good squad) to not have an organised press is remarkable to me

We've reached a semi-final and a Final with him, which is more than we've done under anyone else for decades so results have been good

But he's taken us back to the Hodgson days this last 2 games (the Iceland friendly was a huge red flag too) with a far better bunch than we had in 2016 and a far better squad than Southgate himself had in 2018. Maybe he's better having a limited squad to work with, as he doesn't have a clue how to use the talent that's now in the side

              Yeah, fair summary.

I think the players are beginning to question him. It's just inexplicable the way they're playing.

It's schoolboy stuff, the defenders sitting so deep etc. One of the first things you learn when playing is to move up when it's cleared etc, not just retreat onto your 18 box and not move.

              Painful, dreary stuff.

He does have a reasonable record in tournaments but this is definitely one too far.

The FA should get on the phone to Graham Potter so he can take the rest of this campaign. Give him a contract to cover the next World Cup

Ivory Coast sacked their manager halfway through a tournament and ended up winning it (not saying we will if that happens but, just an example). I don't think we could play any worse if we decided to do that. As farcical as it would be

But, as you say, the FA are as cautious and as dull as Southgate so they won't

Having said that, if it's being held outside of England, we NEVER do well in the Euros so I suppose it shouldn't be a massive surprise. 3 years ago was the big chance and he blew it with his ultra-conservative attitude and tactics

I actually agree with that as drastic as it sounds. It'll never happen of course but I do hope Potter is given the job after the tournament.

Beyond fair, spot on. The very sad state of our hierarchy in football will continue to smother any hope we have. It is once again sadly a reflection of what it is being British/English etc. You’re quite lucky you weren’t born a couple of hundred years ago….. they’d of just lobbed you head off. Great post Al Bot.
