    Barkley contract

Posted by ginelli on 14/6/2024, 12:19:19

"Barkley’s contract with Luton was a one-year agreement with a 12-month extension option, but a clause was included in the deal allowing him to leave for £5million if the club were relegated."

Obviously this could still not to be true but the dots are starting to line up so IMO this is likely to be his contract. This is more good work by the recruitment team. Signing Barkley was a gamble last year and I think a fair few of us would not have surprised had he slowly and unceremoniously disappeared into the ether as the the season progressed.

In this light, I think a £5 million release clause is a good negotiation. In a sliding doors scenario, £5 million could easily have looked too high a fee for buying clubs.

Barkley was good for Luton and Luton was good for Barkley

Long drawn out process this transfer. It's still not been confirmed yet. He could decide to stay and play in the championship highly unlikely but there is that chance

Apparently the transfer window only opened today, so doubt any business could be formalised before.

Completely agree, was a gamble for him and a gamble for us - everyone’s come out of it a winner

Agreed £5m is reasonable all round

Agreed, we’ve got another £5m and our biggest earner off the payroll

....and, as I have posted previously, probably, about £3 million for finishing at least one place higher than we would have done without him plus the experience gained by others from playing alongside him.

And the intangible but clear and priceless benefit of seeing a player of his quality play for us, promoting our profile and attracting a positive view of the team and club across a huge audience: with, if true, the added benefit that others maybe like him will see how fairly he's treated.

Will miss him if/when gone, some sensational moments and memories.

All true but Villa are a wealthy club playing in the Champions League next season, so only fair that they don't get him dirt cheap.

A lot of people would argue 5mil for a player of his caliber is dirt cheap.

I get that but very few clubs seemed interested in signed him 12 months ago for nothing more than a signing on fee.
