    The thread on global warming

Posted by Gardener on 11/6/2024, 21:27:33

    Fuckin hell.

    We have some crazy posters

I have had an allotment for the last 15 years and there is no doubt that the temperature year on year has risen and has become more extreme with crazy amounts of rain at times, and gales in June that are very destructive.
Slugs are surviving winters because of the lack of frosts.
I can now grow sweet potatoes and my fig tree actually yields full grown fruit for the first time..

Climate change has happened before as many ready know, but, that was before the human population explosion.

Whether this is man made or not is irrelevant, the people who have the power need to make big decisions in the next 10 / 20 years or there will be worldwide devastation.

All these conspiracy theorists will look pretty stupid then.

Fig trees have been grown in the UK for centuries though mate, hardly anything new.

Disagree in whether it's man made or not being irrelevant. If it's a natural occurrence then surely people wouldn't support man made decisions to counteract it?

The climate is changing but it has nothing to do with what we are doing. The temperature has been slowly rising since the mini ice age. The weather this year is down to El Niño. I can’t remember what years it was, the 1300/1400 the climate really went berserk there was 3 years of no summer, crops failed.

You keep throwing conspiracy theorists around yet you don’t go and look at what really is the cause. The orbit of the sun plays a massive part of the earths temperature. Notice how they say hottest month SINCE RECORDS BEGAN that was 1853. The planet has been a lot hotter thousands/millions of years before this date, it’s also been a lot colder ie ice ages.

You claim climate change has happened before you also state that was before the human population explosion, so in your own words you’ve admitted that we have nothing to do with the rising temperatures.

Whatever those who have the power decide they will not be able to do anything about it. If you look at temperatures before the ice age you will find that it’s actually cooling, wasn’t they warning us in the 70s that we were heading into an ice age. I can remember Leonard Nimoy warning us of this.

What a beautifully simplistic way of looking at something as complex as the world's climate. The key here is that the rate of change is something not seen before, normally climate change occurs gradually over thousands of years. Now, it is happening within decades.

          That's the key difference.

Though, if you are putting great store in Leonard Nimoy then who am I to argue?

There are lots of credible scientists who state that the human aspect of climate change is less than 2% of current values. Doesn’t fit the agenda though does it.

So we are not responsible for what is happening naturally, though I wouldn’t call scientists credible, when they run models to fit their agenda.

Two points I’d like to make.

If Sidiq Khan is right in saying that we are killing people with vehicle fumes in Greater London (ignoring the fact that the report said that this was not the case and he was caught asking the experts to sex up the official document to say it was the case), why are we allowed to kill people if we pay £12.50 a day to do so?

Secondly, if this ‘crisis’ is so extreme and urgent, why are there people who vehemently believe in it’s seriousness , on this messageboard, using the planet’s resources for idle chit chat. If I believed it was that serious, I’d be refraining from most things , including having a phone, car, foreign travel etc etc

Re: The thread on global warming

Posted by MG on 12/6/2024, 0:03:52, in reply to "Re: The thread on global warming "

First, there is plenty of evidence to show that reducing pollution saves lives. And the £12.50 is changing overall behaviours which is what is needed.

The crisis, is extreme and urgent, and no, I don't believe you would.

                      A. Go and seek out the report that stated that the ULEZ zone would make little difference. Also what’s gonna happen when the older cars are all but off the road, are they gonna scrap it or include newer cars? After all the congestion charge was overwhelmingly about pollution, hence the exemption of Hybrid and Electric Cars. Electric cars don’t cause direct pollution so they shouldn’t pay, right. But the EV owners get a lovely Christmas present next year. 😀

If you are so concerned about the planet’s resources, why are you using them to talk to me?

                    That's way to late.
We have 5 years max to reverse the CO2 levels to keep temperature increase to 1.5°C. Anything more than that we'll be having away fixtures at Cambridge-next-the-sea and Doncaster-on-Sea. The rising temperatures have nothing to do with CO2, look at the charts CO2 rises after the temperature rise.

Without CO2 life would be nonexistent, why don’t you look at temperatures during the Roman period, they were growing grapes in Scotland.

If there was a real problem with human s causing climate change then surely those in power would stop flying, would stop travelling around in their luxury yacht’s. Like I have said before there is nothing they can do about it.

Growing grapes in Scotland in the Roman period? You're off your rocker. They certainly weren't. They weren't even in Scotland, and the natives most certainly didn't.

Did Leonard Nimoy tell you that one, too?

The Romans invaded Scotland in AD73, within 7 years they controlled much of the country. The Romans introduced grapes to the UK and grew them in many locations, in which was a relatively warm climate, as far up as Hadrian’s Wall, where archaeologists have found evidence of a winery.

The Romans introduced grape growing in what was then a period of relatively warm weather, with evidence of vine planting as far north as the East Midlands, and of wine making along Hadrian's Wall.7 Jul 2023.

Making wine is not the same as growing grapes, is it.

Claiming that the Earth could return to a state like that of the Eocene Epoch more than 33 million years ago, when there was no ice on either pole, Forbes reported that Anderson said: "We have exquisite information about what that state is because we have a paleo record going back millions of years, when the earth had no ice at either pole.

"There was almost no temperature difference between the equator and the pole.

"The ocean was running almost 10ºC warmer all the way to the bottom than it is today and the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere would have meant that storm systems would be violent in the extreme, because water vapor, which is an exponential function of water temperature, is the gasoline that fuels the frequency and intensity of storm systems."

Forbes summarized other comments Anderson made, such as how recovery would be impossible without committing to a "World War II-style transformation of industry—an acceleration of the effort to halt carbon pollution and remove it from the atmosphere, and a new effort to reflect sunlight away from the earth's poles."

The reason for my #thickelectorate posts goes back to the 2017 general when ipsos mori did in depth research as to how certain society groups voted. Part of their research noted that the higher the educational qualification the less chance they would vote Conservative.

I think there are mini climates within towns in different locations. I also contribute towards an allotment and this years yield doesn’t look great. If you speak to others in the town they are raving about their fruit and tomato plants etc, ours is looking poor. I think most people are using greenhouses and planting later on.

This year has been slower because how wet the spring was.

‘Extreme’ 😂. In the last few years I can remember one ‘extreme’ event, when a very high level atmospheric condition, dragged very warm weather up to the UK from North Africa (where it is very normal) for 36 hours and the lefty media lost it’s mind. Even that renowned expert in climate (or at least taxing the working class because of it), Siddique Khan said it was ‘causing’ fires. Of course being smart, you’d agree that warm weather doesn’t cause fires, people do.
