    Next seasonís starting XI/subs

Posted by Earls on 29/5/2024, 12:50:15

Letís assume Doughty, Mengi, Barkley and Adebayo are off. We obviously also need to replace Kabore and Lokonga, as well as Berry and Potts in the 25. And Lockyer, presumably.
Thatís nine players. But even allowing for all that, and assuming we get the signings right, weíve still got a pretty good team here already that Iíd fancy to finish mid-table.
Get the transfers right - happy days.

    Kaminski

    Giles
    Bell
    Andersen
    Burke
    Ogbene

    Chong
    Nakamba
    Townsend

    Morris
    Taylor

Subs: Walton, Johnson, Holmes, Hashioka, Mpanzu, Clark, McAtee, Brown, Woodrow

We have a left sided defender

The main issue will be strength in depth - last season showed that injuries can kill us. We need at least one "starter level" CM and CB -personally I would go for 2 CB starters and one FB plus CM. CB's get injured a lot as do Defensive midfielders and then you have the drop off. I think we are okay going forward if we keep Morris, Brown stays fit and Taylor and McAtee are kept in the squad. I reckon 4 x £10m players would be what we need to finish top 2

Djed Spence reportedly on offer for £1m. Could we do for him what we did for Barkley and Townsend?

I do know someone who had pretty close contact with him during the early days of his career.

              Definitely not a Luton signing.....

Like Ross Barkley, before we got him back on track, I think the Prem has seen enough of Spence.
He's got talent, but is it £1m quids worth of talent?

£1m is a risk worth taking. Again, it's the wages and length of contract which would be the gamble.

I said we should have bought 1 player for 10m this time last year and was ripped to shreds. I expect you to be hung, dried and quartered for suggesting spending that in the league below.

                  'hanged, drawn and quartered'.

One out of three is bad, as Meat Loaf never sang, but I reckon implied.

But, no. We'll sign who we sign. If they cost £50k, or nothing, that's what we'll spend. If they cost £5m or £10m then that's what we'll spend. Our 'best' players last season cost next to fuck all whereas our 'worst' probably cost the most. The biggest problem with big transfer fees is that, almost certainly, big wages would be required and that's probably what counts them out.

                  Cheers, Jim

Weíre just about to have 40 odd million deposited in the account , weíve got a window of 2 seasons where we have a financial advantage over most of the league.
As usual this always gets extrapolated to spending £100 million. But if the right player is available and we can afford it. (Based on fact all transfers are paid in instalments anyway ? Then why not ?

Biggest problem for me there is the defence.
Two wing backs that are worse defensively than last season, if at all defensive !
Giles is competing with Chong further upfield not LWB.
Holmes probably needs to be in there as probable captain.
Shea has to be ahead of Walton. Krul ?

That's a pretty good assessment. I'm still not sure a Prem club will pay the money we will want for Adebayo though.

I'd love to see him and Carlton up top next season. I think after a year in the Prem, they'll rip up the Championship.

That team is already better than the one that came 3rd... especially if we get a full season out of Nakamba.

We need to splash out a small fee on a CM as I wouldn't play Townsend and Chong together in that formation

Or just play Pelly with Marv and push Chongy or Townsend up behind the front two.

Personally do not think we will see 10 coming in (unless some unexpected departures). Where do you see any incoming players fitting into your starting 11 i e.who do you consider to be the "weaker" links based on your " mid table" prediction?

We need 25 players for the squad. Johnson still doesnít count, so thatís 18 players there (19 with Shea/Krul.)
Iíd guess maybe two of the 19 Iíve listed might yet go before the season starts. Where weíre light is pretty obvious, imo: we need two more full-backs, at least two more centre-halves, two more central midfielders, ideally a youngish wide midfielder as quick and creative as Chong became.
Theyíre all areas we could/should improve on from whatís in that squad Iíve listed.

Possibly. However, how many of these required recruits do you see as being starters if we are to change the team/squad from mid table to challenging for promotion?

Unfortunately we will lose 4, 5 or maybe 6 to the PL, probably bring roughly an equivalent number in

They have been built in already. However, Holmes and Hashi already brought in, plus return of Taylor and McAtee (and even Giles) plus probable breakthrough by Johnson may mean the number in may not be too large (unless development squad players)

If for example Adebayo goes, I think we will bring in a replacement using the money we receive for him.

To be fair, given the loss of Kabore and Lakonga and likely sale to the Premier League of a number of our "better" players, I would hope a fair bit of the funds generated would be spent on "quality" replacements (or very clever playing of the loan market)
