    RE new deal

Posted by ActonHatter on 29/5/2024, 11:18:21

Call me a cynic have we only offered one because someone is sniffing around him?

Confused as to why we didn't tie him up a bit longer at some point over the season

Maybe because we can't afford to pay him as much as if we had stayed up, but we can afford to pay him more than he is on now?

Current contract 2 million a year 2 Years left to run compensation 4 Million when the premiership comes calling makes sense trying to offer him a new deal

He would have a release clause. Would be surprised if anyone is required to pay £4m now, but could well do if he signs a new deal.

Yes, that's how it works, to improve, i.e. maximise, our compensation if anyone comes in for him.
I expect he'll go eventually, not necessarily this season, but we'll be in a better position when it happens, and more inclined to let him go.
It works for both the manager and the club.

It's precisely what happened a few months before NJ left for Southampton.
He signed an extended term, to 5 years if I remember correctly, and we got a few extra million when he left because of the renegotiated contract.

I personally think RE is one of our best managers we have ever had and will continue to learn and improve.
However playing devils advocate an extended contract can work both ways.Lets say we have a shocking season next year donít get relegated but end up towards the bottom half and the same the following year. We would have one of the highest paid managers in the division not achieving.
I donít think that will happen and you can count on one hand the mistakes the club have made over the last 10 yearsÖ.so definitely worth the slight risk imo in offering him an extended contract.

Exactly and most managers leave either by being sacked and paid off or poached by another club who needs to pay off the previous club. Luckily with RE some numpties had already paid off Forest Green then sacked him, so we saved a bit of cash there.

Very few managers just run down their contracts, so this protects our position so if we are successful we would be due a large fee if anyone comes in for him. But also protects his position in a job that isn't known for its long term security.

Probably to see how committed to the club he is?

I think itís the same as N.J we tied him down to 4 or 5 year deal and he was gone to Southampton within a year, making us 4 million. I think itís good sense
