    European Super League

Posted by Old Guard on 22/5/2024, 6:48:58

Initially I was totally against it, but now I say bring it on. Get the super rich top six out of the premier and lets get back to something approaching a level playing field.

      For the nth time.....

The "elite" do not intend to vacate the premier league for a European Super League. They intend to construct a closed shop european "elite" competition AND continue to participate in the Premier League.

Here we go, musings of a boring old fart

Football, as we once knew it, has long gone and isn't coming back.
It has succumbed to what is known as 'progression', as has virtually everything else over the years.

Progression, a word which should imply an improvement to the original, but in reality is often used as a means to make money (but not for you, oh no).

70 years of experts telling me what I can and can't (or should and shouldn't) do/eat/drink/say/drive/buy etc. , and many of those experts have eventually crawled back into the dark holes they emerged from, sullenly complaining that the 'data' they were given (often from other experts) was flawed to begin with.

I'm bombarded constantly by advertising that announces the latest improvements (progression) that I really REALLY need to make my life so much better and entertaining . . . even though these improvements sometimes offer no real improvement (in some cases actually worse) than the original . . . but the 'package' is nice and shiny, and will only cost me a little more . . . 'sigh'.

So, a Super European League, soon to be hailed as the 'best' league in the world, which will grow to include the biggest (richest) clubs across the World, probably two divisions of 20 each. A world Super League, played in brand new 200,000 capacity stadiums and streamed live to every corner of the globe . . at a price.

No participation in domestic cups, they'll instead have their own - the 'World Super Cup' and the 'World Federation Cup' - to showcase their elite skills (and sponsorships) to the viewing masses . . at a price.

Sponsors and advertisers paying ridiculous (to us) amounts of money to get their products shown on the pitch, players shirts, and the big screen . . oh, and during the 10 minute advertisement slots during an 80 minute game consisting of four 20 minute periods (that's a lot of advertising . . remember progression).

        The rest of us?
Well with all the money gone to follow the big boys, we will try to revert back to how it was, but it's too late for that. Without the regular TV cash, income will mainly come from attendances and sponsorship, with extra possible from corporate events and a probable 'ifollow' type pay per view. Cup competitions will still be around although not as rewarding to those taking part or even winning, and presumably a TV company interested in showing some games, but the money involved will not be enough to allow many clubs to survive as they are.

My guess would be three divisions of 22 clubs (after the fallout has settled and wages have stabilized at a lower affordable rate) and the usual 'grassroots' conference format.

Football fans will still follow football when and where they can. The TV fans will watch (86 inch 4K quad stereo) and munch popcorn, knowing that eventually two of their six favourite teams will end up playing (or should that be performing) against each other at a stadium near them, and they already have half of the £1500 ticket price saved up.

        Progression at it's finest.
