    My take on this season

Posted by Herts Hatter on 20/5/2024, 9:25:14

Firstly 20/20 and Edwards have done a great job. Context is everything and top level sport is not easy. There are plenty bigger and richer clubs in the Championship who would have loved our season

However no doubt we did not start with a good enough squad. Barklay was only playing in October- our only PL level signing. 3 pivotal moments in my view - the loss of TL - the player who organised us on the pitch, the home defeat to Shef Utd where we had real momentum and the second half at B-mouth where any kind of win would have been huge.

As to transfers etc - there are never any 100% guarantees and it likely would have made no difference however it IS true that January was shit for us. We basically replaced Giles with Hashi which made no sense at all and could have recalled Taylor given we had a spare squad space. Finally not replacing either Marv or TL in some shape or form was just negligent.

But anyway we were competitive in 90% of games 90% of the time which I think is a great credit - hopefully some good business done in the summer and another tilt at promotion next season!

I think that's a pretty fair assessment. Not sure Taylor was the Wonder Drug everyone seems to think he would have been.

We were unfortunate with the injuries, not just the number, but the timing, with most being in February/March, so unreplaceable.

I agree though that leaving a space open for Locks was an odd decision, particularly when it then went to Fred, who, whilst a good guy, is not someone who's going to make the difference in surviving.

I also think £5m on Giles was an odd decision. It struck me as so back in the summer, as Doughty was one of the few I was confident would be good enough for the PL. Ironically I think Giles might be our left back this year, as I reckon someone will come in for Doughty.

If we could have brought someone in during the window who was half the leader Locks is I'm pretty sure we would have stayed up.

Barkley started playing in August in our second game of the season, not in October.

The squad place is irrelevant as far as Taylor is concerned but, presumably, those who make that sort of decision, decided that regular football would be more beneficial to him (and, therefore, us) than sitting on the bench with Morris, Adebayo and Woodrow (and others) ahead of him. To be fair, scoring goals hasn't really been the problem.

While you may be right in the long term about Taylor surely it was worth the gamble at low financial risk to ourselves? He may have got the extra 4 or 5 goals that kept us up. Also while we did score goals we also conceded a lot too - perhaps a Taylor coming on with 5 mins to go against Everton could have made that difference. Surely it was worth trying?

The problem was our defence, not our attack. You cannot concede over two goals a game and expect too many good results, at any level of football.

                Two things.

It might not have been right for Taylor, he could have ended up playing hardly any football and missed out on the development / experience that has had, which is still a couple of divisions lower than you would be hoping for him to make an impact.

It might not have been right for us. Going into next season we now have a young player, with his first real season of football behind him. High on confidence and looking likely to be able to make an impact in the Championship.

                It's not a "no-loss" situation.

That said, I would have been interested to see how he would have done . As it is, I am really hopeful for him for next year.

Agreed, not being able to find replacements for TL and Marv in January does leave the what might have been thoughts. To be fair the number of injuries at CB was unlucky and I think in particular losing Bell who enables Doughty to focus on attacking impacted our balance. However both Burnley and Sheff U signed players in Jan that didn't do much to help them.

Burnley’s form since end of January is better than ours and if we had replicated we would have survived.

When you say "afford" - just for context we have spent £1m on Hashi plus lets say £15k pw wages over 3 years which is £2.3m so a total "investment" of £3.3m. I have absolutely no idea but presumably a half season loan of a PL player on say £50k per week was not a total impossibility so maybe £1m till the end of the season? Like I said in my post it may have not made a jot of difference but in essence we have spent £3.3m on a player who is not ready at all for a relegation fight and we maybe could have spent £1m on someone who at least has played in the PL .....

As others have said below, we'd have had to send Lokonga or Kabore back (And not sure even if that's possible if they're not injured?).

In terms of being able to afford someone. You're looking at £10 mill for a player with prem experience in January. Minimum. Or you go for an out of contract player whose fitness is not going to be there and would have needed time to get going.

Add to that players who are actually available in January (not many clubs are willing to let people go with the amount of injuries this season), wages we can afford, the right personality who buys into our ethos, and someone who is willing to stay and play for us in the championship, and you're really narrowing the pool.

None of us know what went on in the recruitment dept, but Cuba's insistence that spunking cash on a player, any player, would have kept us up is just wrong, and utterly tiresome.

So you would have sent Kabore back presumably?

To do this you would have had to send back either Lakonga or Kabore, as I think you can only loan 2 PL players when your a prem club

Since 1st Feb they got 5 more points.

So we still would have been down.

And they spent £80m more than us this season.

I’m going on the injury list that made a huge difference. I remember walking down Beech path just before ko against MU and hearing Eli wasn’t playing and just thinking oh ffs not another one gone: I really thought we’d beat them that day. A near fully fit squad and we’d have been mighty close to staying up

My take on our season is that if edwards doesn’t tighten our defence next season in the championship we will be found out and easily lose games. It’s been embarrassing us getting hammered every week in the premiership. I can’t remember in my time as a Luton fan and I have been going since 1973 defensively be poor as we are now. Things have to change next season if we are to do well and attempt to get back into the premier league.
