No, he might have a clause but it wouldn't be for a free transfer. Or, at least, I'd say that's unlikely.

Release clauses tend to be triggered if a club offers a certain fee from what I can recall of such things. As such releasing him for zilch sounds unlikely.

We wouldn’t have got him without something like this, but logically it would have been ridiculous for anyone to have a free transfer clause in the event of relegation. Signing on fees for free transfers are hugely inflated, so financially such a clause would likely mean it would be beneficial for the player to lose. or I suppose there couls be a counter an “above market value” staying up bonus, which too would be silly.

So I’d guess there’s a few involved which will feel modest (and undisclosed, get over it people) but I suspect will cover the costs of having him for the year if someone pays it.

He could have something written in his contract that he can leave if we’re relegated, but I don’t think it would be on a free, more likely for bids upwards of 5million or more.

                                    Yes, that's their job.

We might not know, and some less well connected journalists might not know, but I guarantee if Barkley wants to stay in the Prem, every suitable Prem club will know how much he'll cost and what he wants

I see somewhere that the club have a major say in where he goes so maybe whoever negotiated the deal needs a beer or 2 if we managed to get 10 million for a player we paid fuck all for

Depends what you mean by that. The club certainly talk through the options that players have a work with them to help them make the move that's most likely to help the player. This pastoral support our FC offer for players is well known.

Wish we could keep him ! Offer him more money to stay , shame what a player in the championship he would be.

The club do not have a 'major say' where a player goes. Barkley will choose himself where he goes.
