    Remuneration/renumeration

    Posted by Gut City Hatter on 12/4/2024, 12:54:55

    Yet again (second time in a week), some supposed "expert" on financial matters referred to "renumeration" to mean "pay" when spouting out some crap on Radio 4.

    I didn't much enjoy Latin at school, but at least it taught me the basics of language.

    For those who don't know/are too bloody thick:
    "remuneration" = "payment/wages"
    "renumeration" = "renumbering".

    And don't get me started on my pet hate, people who pronouce "recognise" as "reconise": there's a bloody obvious "g" in the word!

      You'll go mad fighting the tide of poor English and misuse of words. Deja vu is my favourite.

          I don't like it when people say; pars instead of pass, barth instead of bath, gears instead of grass etc.

          But that's because I was brought up proper in the north Midlands.

            But those are proper pronunciations in Bedfordshire. (And no-one sounds an "r" in any of those. It would be better if you'd put an "h" in).
            Adapt to your surroundings.

              Luton accent is a cross between Danny Dyer and Worzel Gummidge

                Fair comments. I was being a little mischievous to be honest. Regional accents are a wonderful thing. I just remember as a kid growing up in Derbyshire with my mum born in Surrey but grew up in Cornwall, and with my dad born and raised in Luton, my southern accent caused me to be teased and bullied because of it. During my secondary schooling I determined that this shouldn't be the case so I tried hard to develop my thick West Derbyshire accent. It's softened over the years having lived in a number of places but I can't bring myself to pronounce the words mentioned above in a more southerly manner.

                  Fair enough.

                  Living in Barton, but going to secondary school in Luton, I was teased for having a "country accent"

            ... but now I'm anxious over whether that should be a semicolon in between those two independent clauses at the end?

              I would certainly say so as it's a continual flow. Even a comma would be probably ok, but NaG is the expert here.

                A semi-colon would be better than a comma; it's splitting the sentence, not taking a breath.
