    Edwards has to do better.....

Posted by Sick Boy on 14/3/2024, 8:17:14

I except the injuries, etc etc. But his reluctance to change shape or style cost us that game last night.

He has to know they would come hard at the start of the second half. We had to just sit in, go 451, with Doughty at left back. Two banks of players. No chasing up the pitch. No flying into challenges. Frustrate them for the first 20 then look to pick them off on the counter.
All summed by their third. Poor old Hashoika appears to be getting the blame. Stop the frame when Semanyo gets the ball. Apart from Hashoika there isn't another Luton player within about 25m! How do you defend a very tricky forward who has all that space either side to run into? Impossible. Remember Ogbene tearing Dan Burn a new one at Newcastle and how we all laughed?

Edwards has to be more pragmatic and learn other ways to play. It's so frustrating as the team had done all the hard work first half. You can never be truly successful with only one way of doing
things. He says we need to learn but he needs to show proof that that includes himself, not just the players.

If it wasn't already, makes Saturday massive.

Although I agree, should have sat in for at least 20mins to slow things down.
That said, injuries are massive, players left are mentally and physically tired. We don't have a multi million pound squad. That is the reality.
Forest will counter. Will we learn or do a Sheffield utd. Think we get some players back and fight for the few, winnable games left. Will be a stronger squad next season, whichever that is.

Injuries are massive I agree. As is fatigue. So why do we carry on with the same high energy pressing, chaos theory tactics?

Comes back to my original point and different ways of playing.

            +1

90 mins of chaos theory has probably led to some of the injuries too

I love that style. It's very entertaining but we need to pick and choose when to play it. We can't do it for 90 minutes at this level. Not yet anyway

It's great in attack. And it worked. We had 'won' the game.

The criticism is from our inability to change when needed.

                Exactly

We needed to play 2 games yesterday. The 1st had got us 3 up. Once that happened, the 2nd should have been to bore the opposition to submission and manage the game. We chose not to

                  +1

20 minutes of that, their heads drop and the game is won

Yep. He’s obviously got credit in the bank, but yesterday was shocking by Edwards. Anyone could see what was going to happen at 3-1, but he didn’t respond at all until 3-3.
Hashioka was poor all game, but he stayed on. Pelly’s not a Prem centre-half, but he had to come on earlier to rescue Hashioka. (Not blaming Hashioka long term at all, just one of those nights for him.)
Even worse was keeping Clark on. Berry had shown v Palace he’ll get a tackle in. As you say, no-one else was. Clark is superb to get you 3-0 up, but he is absolutely not defensive. Berry might not 100% have been the answer, but he would have got into Bournemouth more than whatever that second half was.
I’m sure Edwards will learn from yesterday. But he had a total mare, and sadly last night was absolutely on him.
