    With all this nostalgia today

Does anyone remember going to the grocers where you would go from one part to another and queue up each time. I seem to remember going to I think it was Sainsburys in St Albans, and they used to pat the butter with what appeared to be 2 wooden paddles?

That was a it before my time but I can just about remember when we had a full complement of defenders to choose from.

Yes, Sainsbury's in George Street was the same.
I remember going in with my grandmother and while she queued for the cheese, I joined the queue for the ham to save her a place.
A few years ago the shop that now occupies the the premises had a refurb, and took down the covering on the internal walls to reveal the lovely brown and cream tiles for a couple of days before covering them up again.

And one of the town hall promotion celebrations coincided with that, so more people saw it

One of my earliest memories of Sainsburys in Luton was those big slabs of butter being cut to order then patted into shape.

For some reason I thought that was in Bury Park. But then I was only 5!
