The old Co-op in the Arndale thread

I worked as a silk screen printer there in the mid 70’s. Our studio was on the top floor in one of the warehouses nearer Mill Street end. We overlooked the bridge and the Royal Hotel. The store was a magnificent building.

What you might not know is it had at least 4 levels below ground floor. The lighting wasn’t the best and would flicker and crackle. The odd water leak too. We stored all the window display stuff accumulated over the years. Rickety old stairs and a small lift with the metal concertina door and an outer door. You could open the outer door and shut the lift down. Bloody scarey if you were in it at the time.
The head of the menswear dept Bob, produced plays at the library theatre for the St Christopher Players. We did the stage sets for them. I fancied the leading Lady, and this silly b, made a complete fool of himself on a mixture of Cinzano Bianco and Pernod at the after show party. Well we did at 16. 🤭
