    Another Arndale/Market Question

Posted by Curious on 11/3/2024, 13:22:59

Does anyone remember the fishmongers/butchers out the back of the market ever being busy?

I can only ever remember it always being deserted apart from the haunted looking people who worked there.

    Always felt creepily sad.

Wasn't it stuck in the far corner from memory, I just remember the smell and not liking fish at that age. Can't remember if my parents ever bought from there but I know they did from the fruit & veg stall close by

There were some double doors you went through at the back if I remember but it almost felt like a forgotten area.

Can't remember the fruit & veg stall but plenty others like the VHS store next to the sweets shop, the pet store at the back, a small toy shop that sold random board games and obviously the joke store and t-shirt printers.

The double doors went to the car park, it was a well kept secret short cut so the stall holders could wheel in their stuff. You had to brave the stench first.

The patties there were brilliant, that was the place tucked in the corner right?

Think I'm in the same boat as you as I haven't been for a few years.

Last time it was plenty of cheap clothes stores, it all looked a bit brighter but I didn't hang around long tbh.

When I was at college there used to be a disco advertised there every Thursday, I think. My mates and I thought about going until we saw ‘CHE’ in very small letters at the bottom of the poster…

It has more light init now after asbestos removal..i think that was nearer 30 years ago though ..more sunlight was let in on certain areas ...the market though is in an awfull spot ..shame couldn't be moved to Debenhams..though looks like something may be happening on that site ...

Also no bakers in market anymore...at close of day cakes etc were reduced so it was something to look forward to after spending 6 or 8 hrs walking up and down the centre waiting for the reduction..we had great time with no money or phones though up to no good but nothing serious etc we just had a laugh ..top floor of carpark dropping them off things that made a loud bang ..sold in. That joke shop in market...also half and half ski hats with luton and a Scottish team on from Pete sports when they were the in thing .
