    the Arndale

Posted by robin on 11/3/2024, 12:01:45

Family get together at the weekend and was discussing the Arndale centre.

Can anyone remember what shop (think it was a supermarket type) was oposite the two indoor entrances to the market. So to your left if you enetered from Church street.

    Talking late 70's early 80's?

Think it went Sainsbury's > Wilko's > Some random clothes store.

Then Sainsbury's moved to its big plot in bury park and Wilko eventually moved to the old C&A.

There was a supermarket type establishment called (I think) International Store opposite one of the entrances to the indoor market.

            Yes, I've just Googled it.
It was in Waller Street and was called International Supermarket.
I wondered why I had the escalator at the shop fixed in my mind. It was the first one in Luton apparently

The International supermarket was in Waller Street originally. They had a cafeteria upstairs, and a record department that sold ex-jukebox records at cut price.
Then it got flattened by the Arndale.

It was indeed first escalator in Luton and a top drawer attraction for young kids when it opened.

There was a Tesco which had an upstairs, a Sainsburys and I believe another supermarket which was not one of the main supermarket chains. We lived in Luton 1976 to 1979 so the memory is trying to work overtime. I also remember The Coop which I think is where the big Weatherspoons is. They had a smaller supermarket but a big department store where you could buy all sorts of things. If you got there at 17.20 all the staff were ready to leave almost on starting blocks. I will try to remember that other supermarket

Given their penchant for developing properties it's a shame that building was demolished as I reckon Wetherspoons would've made a decent job of preserving it

A tiny sports shop in the corner of one of the inner squares, that always sold decent trainers.

I'm guessing it has been there since the Arndale opened in 1972 - that's 52 years its been there. Wonder if it existed before the Arndale elsewhere in Luton and then moved in when it opened?

Wonder if there are any other independent shops / outlets that are still going anywhere in Luton, that have been around for 50 years or more? I suppose a few local corner shops maybe, that have passed down a generation, but as I don't live in Luton anymore, I wouldn't know of any.

                                                            Anyone name any??
