    Another ridiculous decision to shorten it. Look at this report about the prosperity it will bring just to the Euston area;

      There's other rumours of shortsighted cost cutting doing the rounds.

      Apparently the third runway at Heathrow is going to be cut in length by 75 % to save money

        Maybe Google, one of the richest companies in the world, would like to fork out then not the hard pressed British taxpayer.

          If only they hadn't insisted on such high speeds they might have made a real go of the thing.

            It also seems like they've wasted a hell of a lot of cash unnecessarily tunnelling under some parts of the countryside, just so some of Dave's mates don't have to see a train.

              Yes, and to be fair if it had been managed anywhere near properly it shouldn't have cost anything like as much.

                Yes the opponents have created a self-fulfilling prophecy.

                I hear what you are saying but realistically why would you build something that's going to last probably well over century that isn't future proofed and built to the highest possible standards?

                As it is when the ECML (East Coast Main Line) was electrified in the late 80s/early 90s it was done on the cheap. The class 91 locomotives that were ordered to run new trains were built with a design running speed of 140mph but the overhead catenary equipment only for 125mph running. With the distances between London and Edinburgh that would have made a significant impact.

                  There's nothing too shabby about say 150mph trains. They are far cheaper, they can be made just as comfortable while the costs and negative impacts of the line are massively reduced because of the additional flexibility you get.

                  If they had done that we might have had much of that additional North-South rail capacity that's so important by now and we would have spent a lot less.

                  We don't have the wide open spaces and the distances to make such speeds easy to attain or indeed worth that much in practical terms.

                  And just think what the money spent could have achieved . . .

                    Those class 91s could shift!

                    The 125 could also go quicker but the signalling didn’t allow it.

                      Yes, signalling was also an issue. The point remains that it's the infrastructure that is undermining the potential for greater value.
