Why are so many players getting injured?
Posted by Zaphod on 5/3/2024, 19:52:44
It's not just us, every club seems to have loads of injured players
So many clubs play this high intensity pressing games that require players to do a lot of running.
I read somewhere that Gallagher did 10k in a game the other day, which joggers do all the time, but in football it's 10k, of which 9k is sprinting, with quick changes in direction at the same time. It's also stop start sprinting which is shite for the muscles.
As others have said, there's only so much the body can do(although I suspect most clubs, certainly the top ones, use possibly illegal medical help)
The game is probably much more intense than it ever used to be. There's a limit to what the human body can take. Same in rugby loads players getting battered now because they are so much bigger than back in the day.
But here's the thing, as soon as anyone mentions too many games or a winter break fans are up in arms about it. The top racehorses don't race 3 times a week and Usain bolt didn't either.
Football is a competition. People will always be looking to see where they can increase their advantages. Increased fitness levels has been the most obvious route probably since the 60s with innovators taking it to the next level every few years. If you compared today's approach to that of the 50s it would probably be insane the difference in approach and knowledge of what is effective versus what isn't. With all the money in the game now they will keep on trying to find something that gives them an edge. Maybe less games would be effective but while the money is the main motivator for the owners it's not really going to happen in my opinion. The game is a victim of it's own success in many ways, just like tourist destinations that are overrun with too many visitors to the point that the essence of what made them special destinations is lost.
I remember seeing games in the 60's and 70's, starting from no substitutes, with players kicking the s**t out of each other and sendings off were as rare as hens teeth. There would be 3 games over 4 days over Easter, and the clubs would play the same 11 players week in and week out. Yes there were injuries and players would get an opportunity. They didn't have special diets, went out drinking, and the injuries were much less. I believe they are now trained to be athletes and very finely tuned. As such they are so likely to get pulled muscles and strians. They did, however, suffer a lot with brain related problems form heading the ball so much.
In 1979/80, we had eleven players who started 39 or more league games out of 42. The other ten players used that season started only sixteen games between them with Aizlewood accounting for five of them. Two others played twice and the other seven started just one game each. Three of the sixteen came in the first two games and four in the last two so there were only nine starts for "non regulars" in the 38 games in between.
Top six have enough players at top level so if players injured can rotate that's why teams like west Ham loose games when they get injuries that's why we are struggling not enough replacements good enough
