it can't happen quick enough, let them start their Harlem Globetrotter-type world tour where the big team bring along their own ref and officials and team to beat. It will become a series of boring demonstration games taken from country to country and city to city and played in front of popcorn eating, foam large hand glove wearing patrons.
It’s not about supporters, it’s about a TV franchise played and shown globally, games played around the world, like Yank football. Stadiums full of plastic fans wearing their replica shirts.
It will happen, and the likes of Sky behind the scenes with their billions will make sure of it.
They don't care, the traditional match going supporter is getting increasingly less important. They can fill the grounds with tourists and home fans easily enough.
You are right. They certainly wouldnt be that interested in making it possible for the traditional fan to keep up the practice of regular away attendance if such clubs only participated in a European league.
But they're not planning to do that. They'll want to keep playing in something akin to the premier league as well. Perhaps with few less smaller less "attractive" nuisance clubs.
Yes but they still aren't going to worry if the traditional fan base can travel away in the European competition as well or not. Those games will sell out regardless and the stadium receipts will be dwarfed by the TV / prize money anyway.
The real fan who goes to games hasn't been important for decades, the kick off times show that. For example we have a fecking weird 3pm KO on Saturday ffs.
Oddly the 5:30pm KO the other day worked out well for me, the roads seemed much quieter in the afternoon. At least an hour's travel time saved to the game it seemed compared to the usual.
I can fly to Europe for £40. The wrong time of day and the train from Hull to Luton can be double that. I agree, let the top six bugger of and give us back and interesting and competitive league.
You can if you don’t care when you go. When I have been overseas to watch sport the prices of direct flight s to those cities becomes very expensive. Went to watch England in Sevilla a few years back flight was £750 return…went via Malaga but then had an overnight hotel and train expense. Going to the rugby in Rome I have gone via Florence to reduce costs. Last week I could get a hotel in Liverpool on Wednesday night for half the price I could the previous week and they were playing little old Luton… Playing abroad every other week would total shut out the average fan.
Totally agree . I don’t want to get relegated but at least the Championship isn’t full of half & half scarfs . I noticed a few at the Manchester Derby on Sunday…imagine wearing a half and half against Twatford…😂😂 Guess we just have to accept it’s firstly now “entertainment & business” and sport second.
They won't though , the premier league is too lucrative , they want the best of all worlds.
They'll want to continue contesting the national competition the cups the lot while it's financially sensible to do so. They'll hoard even more players in the process and hope to turn everyone else into client or feeder clubs. It will just become a cartel like american sports.
The only way to combat this is to stop playing them. It will take a strong nerve.
