    On this day

40yrs ago to the day in fact. 2 Luton players start in this game against France -

I was there. 2 goals from Michel Platini long before he became a bent FIFA official and night I’ll remember more for the trouble inside and outside the stadium and the tear gas.

Is this the game where England fans lobbed seats from the upper tier that John Motson described as cushions?

I don’t remember that - either the comment or the incident, if it happened at all. What I do remember is that we were sat at the end where both goals were scored, we were in a ‘lower’ tier (I can’t remember if there was an ‘upper’) and that we (English) were basically ‘swept’ away at one point during the second half as the gendarmes released tier gas on us. We literally had to run for cover.

The violence started before we even left London the night before. I was with another Luton fan in a pub opposite Victoria Station before boarding a train to Dover to catch the ferry to Dunkerque when an enormous punch-up ensured between members of the ICF and Chelsea Headhunters and which continued on the train, then the ferry. I also recall a holding yard for brand new Mini Metros in the port of Dunkerque that was broken into by English fans and a real life game of ‘dodgems’ being played (keys were left in the cars). It made huge headlines the following day.
