    Subsí bench options?

Posted by Earls on 27/2/2024, 11:01:20

Any guesses on whoíll take the ninth option on the subsí bench tonight?
The 19 guaranteed options seem to be Kaminski, Doughty, Bell, Mengi, Osho, Ogbene, Barkley, Mpanzu, Chong, Woodrow, Morris, Krul, Potts, Burke, Hashioka, Clark, Townsend, Berry, Nelson.
Whoís missing? Johnson, but heís the same left-sided cover as Potts. Have any other Academy prospects had squad time this season?
(This isnít a moan about lack of cover, btw, just curious. Liverpool have been naming a bunch of kids lately and they seem to be doing ok.)

Liverpool young players have been out on loan at a reasonable level and some are early 20s. Ours haven't and are mostly younger.

that is good - would like to see that lad. Perhaps a stereotype but from what I have seem Japanese players are very energetic and hard working

You do realise the difference between our academy structure and that of Liverpoolís?

Thatís not a dig at you but we need to appreciate the gulf for well known reasons.

Our Devs go to non-league Step 3 and 4 loans clubs and rarely really impress.

City and Liverpool devs walk into most first teams in the top two leagues in Europe.

          You cannot compare.

a lot of Liverpool's devs dont come through their academy from the start, they tend to poach a lot of 15-16 year olds from other clubs. Although granted there is still a lot of work to be done even from that age.

Of course Iím aware of the gulf. The point is more that itís not just Luton who ďdonít have adequate coverĒ in the squad when injuries happen.
As Iíve stated here before, I think we should have recalled Taylor or McAtee as a free option to fill the 25th squad space. But I think Mpanzu is a perfectly good central midfield covering option in place of Nakamba and Lokonga.
And Iíd be interested to know who in the Academy is thought ready to step up to the bench. Thereís a gulf in class between Liverpoolís first-choice XI and ours, as well as our young players. Doesnít stop us giving them a game of it.

Without LBC support for the Academy plans means that we will not attract (or retain) the players we can turn into first team players.

Ironically Reading are a fine example of a club that can and do this well which is remarkable when you consider how badly they are run in every other aspect.

Buying young Reading players is not an accident.

Andersen is out, last I heard about two weeks ago is that he was seeing specialists trying to work out what exactly his injury is.

Shea has been on the bench a couple of times this season but, for a home game, I would expect a youngster to be given the experience although most of the "more senior juniors" are out on loan.
