Question for you - I note that he played for Carlisle early in his career. Did he score in THAT 3-3 match?

That game was in November 1970. He didn't join them until October 1971.

Bob Hatton played for them in that game but didn't score. Allan Ross was in goal - he had been on our books before that but never played a first team game for us.

There's fabulous footballers about today ,De Brunye,Salah etc. But none of them have the swagger and charisma of a Bowles or a Tony Currie

Agreed but it's a different game nowadays. To make it to the top level lads have to be 110% committed from an early age. Totally focused and be supreme athletes.
There's still a few characters in the game, Grealish for example but there will never be anything like the old school players.

                    Agree.

I was talking to an old school friend of many years ago recently, of a decent footballing family, he was one of 2 brothers of three who had played non league football at a decent level and the other - if the attitude had been right and been subject to the right coaching - Iím convinced could have played at Championship level at least, in fact he could have been another Gascoigne. Anyway, said brother revealed that his 21yr old son (who was with him) was on the books at Reading for a couple of years in his mid teens and that the level of athleticism and commitment at that age, compared to when was that age and a promising youngster - just astounded them.

                      RIP Stan.

Have happy memories of watching him - even as an opposition player - do his tricks. One of a generation of supremely gifted players (Graham
French and Robin Fry come to mind) who would simply never have made it beyond pub sides nowadays.

Having said which, even back in the 1970s, my Sunday morning pub side featured players who had been on the books of Chelsea, West Ham
and Bolton (among others). Great lads, all of them, and really good footballers, but just a bit short on the ultimate (extreme) motivation
required to make it at pro level. In particular, the ex-Bolton lad was one of the most naturally blessed players (physically strong, fast, very skilful
with head and both feet) I have ever seen below professional level. He could have been a magnificent, goalscoring centre forward,
but didn't like getting kicked, so played at the back, where he could kick others.

Having seen pre season training at both a PL club and a league 1 club I can back that.
I've seen 13 year old lads training 3 times a week spewing their guts up at the side of the pitch such was the physical limits they were pushed to.
                        Absolutely insane.

Was a close friend of my school mates dad. They owned a greyhound together. We would occasionally jump on the train and watch a game in London if there was nothing on.
Stan was reputedly sometimes in the bookies at 245 on a match day. A character indeed.
Fast forward 50 years and the current QPR number 10 was convicted of smashing a man over the head with a rock. Characters change and not for the better.
