    Power Court update

Posted by RADSB on 1/2/2024, 14:13:01

    From SoT FB page -

Power Court update as at 31.1.24.
As we mentioned, Gary Sweet, Chief Executive of Luton Town Football Club, was interviewed on BBC3CR yesterday. He was talking about the thrill of becoming an Honorary Master of Business Administration. Having been our CEO from non-league to the Premier League, he is unique to this achievement. He ensured he also spoke of the unsung heroes, such as the groundsmen and stadium manager. He made it clear it was received also upon behalf of them and that it is very much a team effort and how phenomenal our rise has been. He was at the University of Bedfordshire actually overlooking Power Court and stated re the works on view ...
"It isn't 'the' work and actually we are relying on other people to do some work before we can get on and start doing our material stuff but there are still a lot of groundworks going on, preparation for the proper groundworks and there will be an application very soon, specifically for those groundworks coming forward, which we will start this year, so we are not far away you know. I know people look at it and feel that there might be a little bit of delay, there is no real delay that things like a promotion, where we had to focus onto the Premier League, and actually, you know, a little redesign, because of the success we have achieved means that we can put a little bit more money into it directly, you know this is all for the better so there is no issue, we are really, really encouraged by everything that is going on."
When asked about having the first brick in the ground this year, Gary responded:
"It will come in two phases, remember that there used to be two massive great big cooling chimneys on that site, there is a river that runs through the middle of it that needs uncovering, so yes we will be starting on all of those things like the groundworks and the river works and obviously the sub-station that people know about, that UK Power Networks are cracking on with, all of those things will be dealt with this year. Once all that's done, the stadium will go up pretty quickly, you know, we hope, so possibly not a brick as such this year but certainly all those groundworks."
When asked what he would say to the fans who say it is never going to happen, Gary replied:
"We are resolute, we are absolutely more determined now than ever that we will get it done firstly and never in our history not only have we been this far but never in our history have we had the obstacles, the challenges that have been set upon us from judicial reviews, to council restructures, to Covid, to a financial crisis, to massive hikes in steel and concrete prices, to gluts in the labour market and recently things like, you know, specialist stadium contractors going bust, which have massively affected the risk in the marketplace from the contractors' point of view, that we need to navigate around and then to our promotions and you know those things, whilst they are all positive, do soak up an awful lot of our time. So with all of that, we are still here and IT IS STILL HAPPENING."
Never in doubt. You can listen to the interview via BBC Three Counties Radio on BBC Sounds, Robert Perrone show 31.1.24 about 3 hours 45 minutes in.

Thanks, couldn't help raising an eyebrow when Gary said promotion to the PL is an obstacle to getting PC built

Same technical team rebuilding half of KR mate. And as he said promotion has meant we can redesign for the better.

I'm sure they would have used this project to learn a lot.

That’s good. I can live with that.

            So my take is
            2024 groundworks
            2025 building starts
(Hopefully ready for 2027 or 2028)

Hopefully as many of us as possible remain fit and well between now and completion

Yes, 2027/28 season I think. I read somewhere that in general stadium build times are 18 months to 3 years - that must be small to large stadiums.

Substation work cost is nearly £10 mil, you'd think Mick Harford would have just forked out for that himself, embarrassing.

Positive, but it's a lot of seasons to try and stay in PL on limited resources at KR.

It isn’t, and never has been, ‘dependent on staying in the PL’. Getting promoted last season was/is a bonus. All of the planning to date was to get the club to a position where we could consistently challenge at the top of the Championship.
We’re ahead of schedule on that point. But you knew that anyway…

Why dont Luton sell the land where power court is set to be built. It’s not a clear piece of land with too many obstacles there before an actual ground can be built. Why don’t we try to build somewhere else . Personally I can’t see it happening it’s a joke everything has to have a planning application it’s ridicolous.

Key words in that are - "we are relying on other people to do some work" - which has been the case from the start. 2020 haven't delayed pushing the start button, others involved have.

Tbf nobody was going to start work opening up the river etc. until 2020 had the money in place to build the stadium.
