FFP and Points Deductions
Posted by Bt20 on 16/1/2024, 11:31:04
Given the huge sums of money now available in the premier league, fines have become almost irrelevant. The only thing that hurts clubs will be points deductions, so the Premier League will surely ensure that remains the ultimate deterrent. Forest don't seem to have much defence, just trying to claim they sold a player in a different period to get themselves more money. That will surely be thrown out straight away and six points deducted. I think they have taken a gamble on getting the extra millions for Dillon and hoping they amass enough points to avoid the drop. It could easily backfire. Everton are in all sorts of trouble. The 777 takeover looks less likely than ever to go through. It might be they need to go into administration just to rid themselves of some of the huge debt. Relegation and rebuilding might even be their best option long term.
The most disturbing thing now is timescale. Football authorities have a history of delaying difficult decisions. Whatever the outcome here, the results must be applied before the end of this season, whatever they may be.
Exactly. Because otherwise, teams who have been relegated in theory, (Sheff U, Burnley and Palace) don't know whether to plan for a PL campaign, or a Championship. This would clearly put them at a disadvantage.
My fear is of a willful delay in order to ( in Everton's case) spread the penalty between seasons thus minimising it's impact. It's going to be a fascination lesson in procrastination and prevarication when Man City's case is eventually heard
I don't think there's much chance of it being delayed in to next season (taking the official end of this season being 30 June). The PL has committed to having the findings by 8 April and appeals dealt with within 6 weeks (from memory) so quite possibly after the last game but before the official end of the season.
The PL are going to try to demonstrate they can deal with these cases in a robust and timely manner to stave off the perceived threat of the independent regulator (a threat to their own self interests only), so I would expect them to do everything possible to ensure the timetable doesn't slip significantly.
That is correct. However from what I understand, Everton's case is a little more complicated.
Because they have already been deducted points and have appealed that decision, the current charge cannot be heard by the independent panel until after that appeal has been dealt with.
No idea if that will all be decided in time to apply any further points deduction to this season. There is time, but will it happen?
