    FAO Outsider, RE: VAR

An appeals suggestion is being looked into amending the use of VAR. Not quite what you have been proposing but closer than the current shenanigans?

I've always said it should be by request of the team who feel hard done y.
It works so well in other sports but that is the sticking point for a lot of football fans - they dont want to be using a system that works in another sport, especially if it was first used in the US.

The only other thing I would change is that if this new 'limited appeal' would be implemented the video ref should be unbiased by the on field decision. On appeal the decision should be the right one, not trying to find a reason for making the ref's original decision correct.

Before VAR managers came on TV and bitched about the ref's decisions; now they come on and bitch about VAR's decisions.

I hate the loss of spontenaity that VAR brings. Our goal at Burnley I waited before celebrating, then there was no indication VAR would get involved so I joined the celebrations, then about 30 seconds to a minute later suddenly VAR is being brought into it. Then you have to wait to see which way it goes. Luckily it goes our way but the whole thing is awful to experience. You can't devise a perfect system that relies on human judgement. Let's get back to going with the ref's on field decision. They'll make mistakes but football is being broken up from a flowing, constant sport to some kind of hideous Americanised stop start thing. At the very least if they won't get rid of it completely then go to each team has 1 appeal and they lose it if wrong. Plus there is a very short timeframe within which the appeal must be lodged, ie 10 seconds.

Two points Al. First, the rules are not clear, they're open to interpretation. They must be made easier for officials to adjudicate on.
Second, if it(VAR) does have to exist in it's present form then yes, ten seconds to debate it. After that, go with the ref's original call

They keep changing the rules as well which will only adds to the confusion. The sport seemed to do ok for over 100 years without all the constant tinkering, at least not as frequently as it seems to be nowadays anyway. I'd add that any VAR investigation should also need to be concluded within 60 seconds of the appeal being lodged and if that isn't possible stick with the ref's on field decision. We need to keep the game flowing and we need to keep the spontaneity in, not out.
