Frightening situation. Presumably the pilots have a separate oxygen supply.

I was in Banjul in the late eighties for a holiday and was surprised to find an excellent stadium on way to our hotel. Yet the people in general had next to nothing.

'We almost got carbon monoxide poisoning '

How does that work then? They either did or they didn't. The absolute fannies.

Presumably because carbon monoxide poisoning is a gradual process, the extent of which can be looked at on a scale, rather than an instant and binary one.
Or, perhaps more simply, they were much closer to getting carbon monoxide poisoning than they would have been had the incident not occurred.
          Happy to help.

Gradual or not, you've either got it or you haven't. Sos.

Carbon monoxide poisoning changes the ability of the red blood cells to absorb oxygen ( ie the red blood cells stop working completely )
So if you are say in 50% carbon monoxide atmosphere, in about half an hour you will be dead.
The damage to the players will vary , I suffered 10% carbon monoxide because of a faulty company car. Was given 3 or 4 blood transfusions and was unable to work for 6 months ( blackouts and vomiting if the air was anything but pure )

I hope they are okay 👍

Having read the article, as an aircraft engineer, I suspect that the air conditioning / pressurization of the airplane was faulty. That would lead to a lack of oxygen as the airplane climbed, not carbon monoxide poisoning. I have been on test flights where the air conditioning is switched off above 10,000ft altitude. It doesn't take long before you start feeling very dizzy and are reaching for the oxygen bottle that you have been provided with.

And there are worries about blood transfusions

NHS has been buying American blood where drug users etc get paid to give blood. You don't know where the blood came from.....

I thought they stopped that about 40 years ago because of HIV.

                          Not got Google?

It's not illegal to pay for blood in the USA.

You can earn $400 a month giving blood

I meant the NHS buying blood from there.
Do you not remember the HIV scandal?
