An ex mayor of Luton said in the late 1940's that Luton had grown too big too quickly. Vauxhall was expanding as were the associated industries. People came here from all over the country to work and he said many were not interested in the town in any way, only money. He felt then that the town had lost its identity - from memory, I think he grew up in the Edwardian era. He may well have had reflective nostalgia - wishing past times could continue - but much of what he said I can see in todays town. It's a complicated issue but the chances of having a decent discussion on here are zero.

Luton lost its identity ? Not only Luton, much of the country has and it'll get worse.

How can you disagree, it’s been like that since the 1980s, not a lot different to many towns( I’ve been to Leicester today!!)

No one has any pride anymore, I travel down to games on the train I look down into back gardens near Leagrave, absolute wilderness, piled High with shit.
One of those houses was where my Great Uncle lived untill 1966, I have photos of me looking up at the passing trains, in his immaculate garden , and the small allotment he had.
He never had a pot to piss in, but as many of that generation, he looked after what he had.
The residents of that area make the shit and the muck( not Councils)
They seem happy to live in abject squalor of their own making.
The Town centre is just a reflection of those houses..

Viewing those houses you refer to..when passing back gardens by train..the number that have large poorly constructed rear extensions..or double garage size bree block sheds in the garden..who authorises this..no driveway..but bloody big building in the garden

They call them Luton sheds. Mini houses built for either the grandparents or to illegally rent out. No planning permission obvs but it’s too hard for the council to police.

People live in them..crumbs..council must be aware..if the original prop is say a 3 bedroom..you gotlot of people resident there does no body think how do they all fit in

People are lazy. People would much rather watch TV all day all weekend than get in their gardens and care for their homes.

No pride, it’s all short term and throw away culture.

As is known I own a number of properties and I employ gardening and maintenance teams to ensure my rentals are kept spotless, doesn’t come cheap…..

Other landlords are not so prudent and think about profit rather than the environment and aesthetics of their properties.

For my own personal houses (where I reside) I take pride in the grounds and do much myself.

By and large it's the whole country. Rubbish everywhere. Take a drive down any stretch of main road or motorway and there's rubbish strewn along the verges. People don't give a monkeys. I've lived in a decent area of MK for years. We've literally only just got wheelie bins here, before people putting rubbish out in thin old black sacks , by morning all ripped to shreds by foxes ,cats , birds food, shitty wipes all over the place , same houses , never went and picked it all up after either .no pride in where they live .
Luton isn't any worse than a lot of towns

Just got off the train at Weymouth station and was gobsmacked by the amount of detritis hanging around the place, both human and otherwise.
Four decades and more of decay and underinvestment in the majority of provincial UK towns is what we're experiencing now.

Agreed, they are human beings but are cast aside as rubbish rather than be put to use. Unless we include eveyone like I feel we used to do pre early 80's then the UK is fucked for the forseeable.

Yes, exactly that. If people don't feel useful then they're not going to feel part of society. Everyone has a talent for something and we need to use that. Whether it's academic, artistic, science based, caring, engineering or whatever. We have to include everyone and value what they can offer or we shut the door on them and have an underclass that'll be constantly angry and waste their lives.

Power Court will be great 30 days a year.
Town Center will still be a lawless shithole the rest of the time.
No one I knows go there unless they have to these days.

You can now get run over by an Uber eats electric bike inside The Mall. Chapel Street side.

I admire NaGs stance in defending the town but the "reality is", the town has gone to the dogs.

A visit to the library is a must, with not a drop of alcohol to be seen in the place, followed by a spot of lunch in the Whitehouse Tavern where locals play music and take part is jousting tournaments.

The figures have been revealed after Land Registry data showed house prices dropped by 1.8% – more than the average for the East of England – in Luton in December. But the drop does not reverse the longer-term trend, which has seen property prices in the area grow by 7.8% over the last year.

The average Luton house price in December was £282,934 – a 1.8% decrease on November.

It's everywhere and while it does seem to be worse, I reckon a lot is perception. There used to be huge fights, stabbings, cs gas, people using cars as weapons, pretty much every week outside Dukes in Chelmsford bitd and only the real nutters went out in Colchester when the squaddies were on leave.
