    Power of Attorney

Posted by Hawkesworth on 10/1/2024, 10:03:22

Need to sort this for my one of my parents, any idea how much I should be paying for this, someone said they paid £2,500 and other £200, one of them is either lying or taking the mick?

I used the (Wills &Trusts) company who look after things like this for us and paid £1,600 for both parents for both financial and health LPAs, with also some minor updates to both wills... I could have done it myself but I am hopeless at anything requiring attention to detail. They also chased up the Office of Public Guardian as it was around Covid time. So worth it IMO.

Did it 6 months ago. Pretty straightforward and paid nothing as my mum was on qualifying benefits. Check your signing dates. Although we did everything in the correct order, the certificate provider had dated her part wrong.

Did it this time last year myself and cost me I think £65 definitely not more than £100. You can do it online or have the forms sent. Just follow the instructions and send it off.

Unless there are complications (dementia etc), easy to do it yourself. Cheaper and paperwork gets correctly registered as part of the process. As Buzz says below, take your time with the paperwork but if you read it, follow the instructions, pretty fool proof.

If there are complications, a specialist solicitor your best bet.

Did one for my Mum in the Summer, on-line about £90 from memory. Gov website. Just make sure you follow the correct signing order. Took about 8 weeks for it to become official. I’ve only done the financial one, currently.

When I lost my mum I done it all on line and it wasn't massively expensive and it was relatively easy to do.

                Just take your time

just to clarify. This was when I went through the probate process.

                  Done it online ‘financial’

                  £80 if I remember correctly.

2 different types, health and financial. Could cost about £800 through a solicitor but much cheaper if you do it yourself

My mother in-law has recently done both types as well as altering her will - cost around £1300.

A friend used to be a solicitor specialising in probate and POA's. Her view is that unless you are familiar with, and fully understand, the legal terms, you may end up causing yourself problems in the future - you may think she's bound to say that.
People saying £80 are probably talking about making a will. Each POA costs £62 (I believe) to register with the appropriate Gov. Dept. apart from any other fees.

No. I’m posting about a POA.

                        Done it last year.

                          You've done well then.

I've checked the current cost for registering a POA, it's £82 not £62.

If the document is not registered it has no legal standing.
Did you pay a separate registration fee as well as the £80?

                            Re: Power of Attorney

Posted by Okey on 10/1/2024, 13:17:10, in reply to "Re: Power of Attorney"

                            No just £82.

I won’t pretend it was easy as the gov agency sent the wrong forms to me once and the whole process took 6-8 months roughly.

                            That was my experience anyway.

No other fees involved in my application thankfully.

As others mention here, it's very straightforward to do yourself, either online or paper copies which they can post to you. I did mine just recently, one for health and welfare, one for property and financial affairs, £82 for each application.

Did the same. LPA Heath and LPA Financial for both my parents. Was pretty straightforward.

Remember that both LPAs fall away - health obviously - in the event of their death.
