If you go weekend of the 3rd Feb it will be great fun…I might even buy you a pint…..
I quite like Rome and actually prefer it in the winter to the summer when it’s crowded and very often scorchio ….

Bologna, Milan, Turin, Verona, even Naples if desperate, all but Rome, an overpriced tourist trap, crap food, horrible people, and some of the worst overpriced hotels I have ever stayed in whilst in Italy.

Recommend the Fifteen Keys with the wife, or the Lancelot Hotel with family.

Anywhere but Rome (unintentional Beautiful South quote!). Dreadful place - the sights are great (though crammed with tourists of course), BUT:

The people are fucking dreadful - rude, racist and incapable of walking at more than a snail's pace.

Restaurants etc. are in the main tourist traps of shite quality. Different of course if you know someone there, I'm sure there's tonnes of decent places off the beaten track.

Transport is dreadful - there's basically a single metro line that goes nowhere of any use.

There's an overall feel that there's a bizarre nostalgia for fascism there - loads of Mussolini era statues/buildings/monuments that people seem strangely proud of.

On no account go to a Lazio game - the most unpleasant, racist fanbase I've ever encountered (I went to a game and a VERY significant number of people were yelling monkey chants at their own black players, never mind the opposition).

Go to Milan instead, which is lovely.

I was also oddly disappointed by Rome. Just felt full of grifters and shite restaurants. However I saw a Roma v Inter Milan back when both were good. Was fantastic.

stay central if you can, i stayed at the Holiday Inn, a bit out of the centre and used the metro daily. Great city, great food and great culture. enjoy you stay.

My Mrs and Daughter went there for 3 days last week. Massively overrated and as expensive as fuck they tell me. And I’ll end up picking up the tab.

Stay central, you don't want to have to get public transport in and out every day! Last time I went I stayed at the Hotel Pantheon which was really nice, but that was 12 years ago...
